There is something about a violin. It instantly gives us goosebumps and our feet start tapping to the beat of the melodies. Then, our eyes flutter closed as we sing along in our heads. Fever’s Candlelight Concerts in Johannesburg brought about all these reactions and more when we attended their Coldplay Tribute at NH Johannesburg on 30 March 2025. It was an evening filled with sophisticated fashion and musical masterpieces, ending off with a delicious buffet dinner that sewed it altogether.
With a presence in over 100 cities and having had over 3 million attendees, Candlelight Concerts is the new global trend – one worth tapping into. Recently, Johannesburg has opened its doors to this experience, inviting local and international tourists to visit the City of Gold and experience these curated events for themselves.
The Vienna String Quartet and the Pangea String Quartet takes turns gracing the stage, with Joburg’s concert locations including NH Johannesburg and Shepstone Gardens. The perfect settings for serene evenings.
Hundreds of candles surrounded a three-tier stage as we entered NH Johannesburg’s ballroom. The only light came from the dancing flames, creating a romantic, low-light atmosphere. Taking our seats, we marveled at the stage in the centre of the room – the audience fanning out around it.
As the clock struck six o’clock, the four members of the Vienna String Quartet filed into the ballroom. Taking their places, their bows all lifted into the air. Soon, Coldplay’s Clocks filled our ears, resulting in an audience filled with surprise and awe.
Songs like Don’t Panic, Speed of Sound and Trouble followed, with the violin music – expertly blended together – making for beautifully layered sounds. Our personal favourite, Fix You, was followed by Paradise and Yellow. Finally, the evening ended with The Scientist and A Sky Full of Stars, lifting the audience to their feet for a standing ovation.
After the musicians had left the stage, the music seemed to linger. We were still swaying to Coldplay’s hits as we entered the NH Johannesburg’s dining area. Here, a full buffet dinner lured us in: Pork ribs, chicken thighs, Spaghetti Bolognese, roasted potatoes, salad ingredients and fresh vegetables lined the counter. We stacked our plates and settled down with a glass of wine to reminisce over the fabulous concert.
