When a place has been standing since 1682, it tends to collect a few legends. Staycations at Blaauwklippen Manor in Stellenbosch are now the norm thanks to this grand old soul of the Stellenbosch Winelands. And now, after an extensive rebuild following the 2024 fire, the Manor House and Jonkershuis are stepping back into the spotlight, ready to welcome travellers with a confident new stride.
For Hello Lifestyle, walking through its gates feels a bit like time travelling – except this trip comes with plush beds, mountain views, gas fireplaces and interiors that happily flirt with the estate’s centuries of history.
The fire of April 2024 could’ve been the end of Blaauwklippen’s historic buildings – but instead, it sparked a remarkable comeback story. Heritage architects and specialist craftsmen rolled up their sleeves, gathering original bricks, Delft fragments and surviving structure pieces like treasured relics.
These weren’t simply displayed as museum pieces – they were carefully reintegrated into the new build, restoring the Manor’s sense of place without trapping it in the past.
The interiors were led by Cape Town designer Francois du Plessis, whose signature style always keeps things interesting. Think classic lines intertwined with a cheeky dash of colour. Prints inspired by the surrounding Stellenbosch mountains. A little layering here, a playful nod there. Rooms that feel rich with personality, yet still wonderfully calm.

“We reintroduced a classic, luxurious feel that alludes to the estate’s history, complemented by a creative, colourful and slightly eclectic finish”

Guests also have access to a shared pool tucked into the estate grounds — ideal for those lazy Stellenbosch afternoons.
Long before hotel star ratings existed, Blaauwklippen was already South Africa’s unofficial hospitality stopover. Carriages rolled through its avenue in the 1800s, collecting mail and weary travellers en route between Cape Town and Stellenbosch. Today, the same energy remains — just with better linen and fewer horses.
Its legacy goes deeper than accommodation, too. The estate pioneered South Africa’s first Zinfandel vineyards in 1977, and its Blaauwklippen Blending Competition, launched in 1984, still holds the title for the longest-running consumer wine-blending challenge in the country.
Today, Blaauwklippen stands as a lively mix of wine, culture, food, heritage and community energy. The revived Manor House and Jonkershuis aren’t a nostalgia project – they’re the latest chapter in a 343-year story that continues to adapt, evolve and inspire.
And now that the doors are open again, Hello Lifestyle suspects many South Africans will find themselves drawn back to this beloved Winelands landmark – not just for its history, but for the fresh memories waiting to be made.
