Breathtaking hikes near Joburg to keep you fit, healthy and happy

Up for a wilderness hiking adventure?

Not only is hiking a COVID friendly activity to do with friends and family, but it’s also the beginning of spring and there really is no better time to enjoy the Gauteng weather and be a little adventurous. Feel the warm, crisp sunshine on your back and marvel at our natural beauty. Plus you don’t have to trek for hours. Here is our list of the top 4 hikes in and around the city.

1. Dome Pools Magaliesberg

Why visit: because they have the most magnificent rock pools. After you work up a sweat dive deep into the natural pools. The hike is over the hill and along a stream and is really beautiful. Oh and bring the whole family this one is ideal for the littles.

2. Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve Joburg South

Why visit: there is no entrance fee. And it’s a nature reserve of 640 hectares consisting of veld and koppies run by the Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo, which makes it the largest proclaimed nature reserve in the Johannesburg Metropolitan. It is not pet friendly because zebras and wildebeest roam freely.

3. Groenkloof Nature Reserve Tshwane

Why visit: not only is this the oldest reserve in Africa but you can hike and mountain bike and go horse riding or even go on a game drive. It is R45 bucks to get in and they also have overnight hut facilities for the fitter hikers. We love that you can take a guided hike too, which is about 4 hours long.

4. Melville Koppies Nature Reserve

Why visit: trek your way through the rolling hills of Melville. Instead of visiting the boring local park, you can walk or hike the koppies. This nature reserve has impressive scenery and the vegetation is entirely indigenous. Melville koppies east is available daily for walks and it is pet friendly and child friendly. Note: do not walk or hike with any valuables.
