An interpretation of Japanese excellence and sophistication
Japanese culture is built on a foundation of identity based on social groups and an appreciation and enjoyment of artistic activities and forms of entertainment. Furthermore Japanese people hold a very high regard for sophistication and craftsmanship. IKI Cocktail Bar has interpreted this philosophy through a cocktail menu that can proudly stand shoulder to shoulder with some of the best bars in Manhattan, London and Tokyo.
As many of our readers know, the team at HLM love nothing more than visiting new and innovative nightlife destinations. So when IKI opened last month, we were exhilarated by the thought of trying this Japanese-inspired bar in the heart of Joburg’s dining and social hub; Rosebank. However before we dove into the mix, we were faced with a momentous quagmire. With fifteen exceptionally crafted cocktails on the menu, represented by names such as Dragon with Ribbons, Geisha’s Kiss and Gentle Karma, where does one begin? Thankfully the team of master mixologists were on hand to guide us on this journey of discovery.
We started off with the Goodluck Dragon. Purely because, well, who doesn’t need a little luck. Now don’t let the classic, elegant Martini look fool you. This cocktail is complex yet extremely smooth on the tongue and leaves an impression of freshness from the lime and apple flavours. All this complexity is cut with a Prosecco chaser. How innovative!
Next our personal mixologist recommended the Liquid Calligraphy. How could he know we were journalists? How could we say no to the fortunate stroke of serendipity? Think of your classic G&T with a major Japanese twist… Sake! The Asian firewater compliments the refreshing flavours of grapefruit and cucumber so well that we just had to order another. And at only R90 we think this is exceptional value for a high-street cocktail.
If you’re looking for something fresh, innovative and inspirational then make a turn past IKI at The Zone @Rosebank and try one of their delicious cocktails. We’ll definitely be heading back soon as we have some unfinished business to attend to and their names are Evening Star and Cuddle Dragon!
