Three of our favourite drinks at the moment

Drinks with Krone

Whether you’re keen on an alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink, we’ve got the drinks sorted. These are some of our current favourites:

Krone’s site-specific Cap Classique

There’s a newly launched Cap Classique in the Krone Collection. The vintage forms part of a pioneering series that explores the most outstanding South African sites for Cap Classique.

Initially, in 2016, Krone released the first site-specific Cap Classique, underscoring its commitment to making vintage-only bottle-fermented sparkling wines. This bubbly – dubbed Kaaimansgat Blanc de Blanc 2016 – came from the iconic Kaaimansgat vineyard near Villiersdorp. The 2018 vintage also hails from this same valley – located 700m above sea level. Finally, the 2019 vintage comes from Krone’s home farm, Twee Jonge Gezellen in Tulbagh. Like Kaaimansgat, the climate in Tulbagh is extreme and the farm is ensconced by snow-capped mountains in winter, while summer brings very hot conditions. In addition, the rocky soils are like nowhere else in the Cape. Carrying the story of its terroir, this Cap Classique will definitely surprise wine lovers with its elegance.

Krone’s cellarmaster, Rudiger Gretschel says: “Producing a vintage wine from a single vineyard is the purest expression of transparency and authenticity. It is an exercise in courage and passion, leaving no place to hide as the quality of the grapes and the skill of the winemaker are in full view.”

TOOR Whisky

Not keen on too much alcohol? Well, perhaps consider trying Toor Whisky’s whisky aperitif. No longer restricted by traditional rules made for outdated whisky-drinking stereotypes, this new classification opens doors to a whole new whisky experience.

In fact, Toor Whisky recently launched two exciting new whisky aperitifs: Camel Thorn and Rooibos. In addition to its beautiful packaging, it also comes with quite an interesting palate, mainly containing caramel and stone-fruit, as well as hints of maple and earth.

Drinks with Delheim

Drinks Delheim

The Stellenbosch-based Delheim recently released its latest vintage and it’s a special one as it’s the first since they’ve achieved official Heritage Vineyard status. The Delheim Wild Ferment Chenin Blanc 2021 epitomises the renowned family-owned winery’s slogan – Worth the Journey – so well.

The vineyard which the wine was produced from – Delheim’s Ou Jong (Old Youngster) vineyard – dates back to 1986. Rather than using commercial yeast, Delheim allows wild strains in the air around the winery and on the grapes to spark fermentation. Says cellarmaster, Roelof Lotriet: “I like spontaneous or wild fermentation with this vineyard because it is old enough to tell a story. Younger vineyards are like children, still needing direction. Older vineyards like the block we use for the Wild Ferment Chenin Blanc have lived through many winters and can tell many tales. For me, it’s like that relative who tells all the best stories at the campfire or dinner table.”

This wine shows a complex array of characteristics associated with its style. Fragrances of stone fruits and orange peel are dominant on the nose, supported by a subtle note of honeysuckle. On the palate, you can expect vibrant fruit with a round mouthfeel and a lasting finish.
