South African Design, Past & Present
Strauss & Co is thrilled to present “South African Design, Past & Present,” an exquisite showcase of furniture, metalware, and ceramic art that seamlessly blends historical and contemporary design practices.
This carefully curated collection highlights the diverse influences, materials, and forms shaping South African creative expression, providing a testament to the country’s rich tradition of artisanal excellence rooted in social, cultural, and environmental awareness.
Among the notable pieces are beautifully crafted furniture items, such as a traditional beefwood armoire with hammered escutcheons, a worn yellowwood meelkist, and a gate-leg table, each narrating its own story.
Wiid Design plays a prominent role in this sale, featuring several benches resulting from successful artistic collaborations.
The ceramic collection includes Hannah Massey’s evocative, quirky, almost anthropomorphic forms, and Thembi Nala’s exquisitely balanced vessels.
Running from 7 to 26 June, this auction coincides with the Hermanus FynArts Festival 2024 and Strauss & Co’s Spotlight art sale, “Art Rooted in Nature: Evening Sale” (25 June) and “Art Rooted in Nature: Day Sale” (timed online 7 – 25 June). Together, these events celebrate the vibrant creativity in all its forms.
