Cape Town is renowned as one of South Africa’s, if not the world’s, leading cities for culinary excellence. On a recent trip through the historic Shortmarket district, we were fortunate to sample two of the city’s trendiest and most innovative destinations, each seamlessly blending history, innovation and exceptional flavours to create unforgettable experiences.

Our evening began with pre-dinner drinks at The Drinkery, a sophisticated speakeasy that redefines the classic cocktail experience. This was followed by an exceptional dining experience at VUE Shortmarket, a rooftop restaurant offering stunning views and a culinary adventure under the direction of a masterful chef.

The Drinkery: A Speakeasy with a Contemporary Twist

Located in the heart of Cape Town’s vibrant nightlife and culinary district, The Drinkery welcomes visitors with an air of refined intimacy. While not reminiscent of the smoky, clandestine bars of the 1920s, this speakeasy offers a contemporary take on the concept, housed within a historic building that adds a touch of timeless charm.

Upon entering, cosy nooks and comfortable seating areas draw you in, each providing the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the carefully curated cocktails. The ambiance is both inviting and sophisticated, setting the stage for a night of exceptional tipples and insightful conversation.

The Drinkery’s cocktail menu pays homage to the traditions of mixology, blending classic techniques with modern flair. Two standout creations encapsulate the essence of this establishment. The Gin Martini – served dry, dirty and adorned with four green olives – epitomises elegance and simplicity. It’s a drink for the true gentleman. On the other hand, the Old Fashioned – featuring Jim Beam, muscovado, orange bitters and Angostura bitters – transports patrons to the 1800s, evoking images of cowboys, oil tycoons and railroad barons. Each sip is a journey through history, making it a fitting choice for those who appreciate the finer things in life.

VUE Shortmarket: Culinary Delights on the Rooftop

After indulging in the exquisite cocktails at The Drinkery, our journey continued upwards to VUE Shortmarket, perched on the rooftop of the same building. This vantage point offers breathtaking panoramas of Bree Street and the iconic Table Mountain in the background – an experience that aptly justifies the restaurant’s name.

The ambiance at VUE is equally captivating, with art deco pieces thoughtfully placed throughout the space, creating an atmosphere that is both timeless and stylish. Under the expert guidance of Head Chef, Darren Allsopp, VUE promises a culinary adventure that invigorates the senses.

The menu is a testament to Chef Darren’s skill, offering a blend of small plates designed for sharing and more substantial dishes for those seeking a hearty meal. Global influences are evident, with each dish being masterfully balanced in flavour and presentation.

Fresh oysters take centre stage, with the Buttermilk and the Dashi Beurre Blanc being two standout preparations. The Buttermilk features a buttermilk sauce, salmon roe and everything bagel seasoning, while the Dashi Beurre Blanc is adorned with crispy Parma ham and caviar. These exquisite starters set the tone for the culinary delights that follow.

The Mushroom Faux Gras – a vegetarian mushroom parfait with pickled shimeji, marinated shiitake mushrooms and brioche – is a revelation, offering a rich and satisfying flavour profile. The climax of the meal was a massive pot of coal-baked mussels, served in a beer and chili sauce with fresh focaccia, perfect for mopping up every last drop of the delectable sauce. Another highlight was the beef chin, cooked in a white wine and gremolata sauce with Parmesan, accompanied by the most incredible beef fat biscuits. It’s a dish that effortlessly provides warmth and comfort on chilly Cape Town evenings.

When a chef pulls out a family recipe, you know you’ve come to the right place. Dinner reached a climax with Darren’s family recipe Chocolate Torte. Rich, beautifully textured and not overly sweet, it is the ideal end to an unforgettable culinary adventure.
