REVIEW: The Peech Hotel – The Perfect Inner-City Escape
The hustle and bustle of Joburg is often what attracts many people’s attention. However, sometimes it can get just a bit too much. Luckily, The Peech Hotel offers a reprieve from reality without you having to travel too far out.
Nestled in the heart of Melrose, The Peech Hotel is a boutique hotel perfect for a business or leisure stay. To celebrate their twentieth birthday, they have undergone some renovations and recently relaunched their beautiful Classic Rooms and Peech Suites.
Why Turning Twenty Was So Monumental
Our love for The Peech Hotel was amped up at its 20th birthday party in November. The space filled up with guests from all over the city and around the world to celebrate the owners, James and Vicky Peech’s extraordinary vision and achievement.
Having opened the hotel in 2004, this power couple has watched their creation grow in leaps and bounds. James Peech first had the idea to become an entrepreneur in the tourism industry whilst backpacking from Bangkok to Bali. In 2002, he bought the house that previously stood on the premises of The Peech Hotel. Thereafter, his reformation project commenced. Funny enough, Vicky has a postgraduate diploma in Tourism Marketing and just so happened to fall in love with a hotel owner. The rest is history.
Twenty years later, the hotel now boasts four different room types, two restaurants, two conference rooms and gardens that spread across two acres. Their latest venture was the refurbishments of their Classic Rooms and Peech Suites, with interior designer, Aparna Ramani, heading up the project. Now, these new rooms are the talk of the town!
The Makeover of the Classic Rooms
We were greeted with smiles and waves from the happy and lively staff at The Peech Hotel as soon as we arrived. It’s difficult to think that this slice of heaven exists in the middle of a bustling city.
We checked into one of the newly refurbished Classic Rooms, overlooking The Peech Hotel’s garden and pool. Climbing the stairs to our room, we noticed how green and beautifully manicured the garden was – a haven for those needing to escape from reality. As we opened the door to our room, the beautiful scent of freshly cut grass hit our senses. The king-sized bed spread across the floor with fluffy sheets and voluminous pillows. In addition, the tea and coffee station was fully stocked with complimentary teabags, hot chocolate sachets and Nespresso pods. A stocked mini bar, which works on an honesty bar system, also ensured for a midnight snack should a post-dinner craving unexpectedly hit us.
The Classic Room’s bathroom was elegantly designed with a massive bath taking up the far end of the space. Ambient lighting emerged from behind a large mirror above the sink. Furthermore, the Raindance shower promised a premium relaxation experience of note.
The next morning, the Garden Restaurant was packed to the brim with everyone looking forward to The Peech Hotel’s breakfast spread. With both a buffet selection and an a la’ carte menu, the options were endless. After such a delicious breakfast and a wonderful stay, it was hard to bid the helpful team at The Peech Hotel farewell. We certainly hope to return again real soon!
What's More?
We’re not the only ones that said goodbye. The Peech Hotel recently waved goodbye to their in-house restaurant, Basalt, making way for something very exciting and new. Make sure you keep an eye on our platform to learn all about the all-new The Pot Luck Club, which replaced Basalt in December 2024.
