Cape Town’s most iconic landmark has once again earned international recognition. A new global eye-tracking study has revealed the world’s most beautiful mountain ranges — with Table Mountain securing a coveted spot in the top 15 worldwide.
The research, conducted by travel insurance experts at JustCover, used advanced eye-tracking technology to measure which mountain landscapes capture attention the fastest and hold it the longest. The findings confirm what Capetonians and travellers alike have long believed: Table Mountain isn’t just scenic — it’s visually magnetic.
As travellers plan their 2026 adventures, mountain landscapes continue to rank among the most aspirational destinations. But this study set out to quantify that appeal.
JustCover analysed 56 mountain ranges from around the world, monitoring how participants’ eyes moved when shown images of each location. The mountains were then ranked based on how quickly they attracted attention and how long viewers lingered on them, resulting in an overall “eye-catching” score out of 100.
Placing 14th overall with a score of 62.6, Table Mountain is the only South African mountain to feature in the global top 15. It sits among legendary landscapes from North America, Europe and South America — a powerful reminder of Cape Town’s status as one of the world’s most naturally beautiful cities.
With its unmistakable flat summit, ever-shifting cloud formations and sweeping views over the Atlantic seaboard and city bowl, Table Mountain offers a visual experience that changes by the hour — whether admired from a hiking trail, the cableway, or a seaside restaurant at sunset.

The results also revealed that the United States dominates the rankings, accounting for nearly half of the top 10 mountain ranges globally.

Speaking on the findings, Letitia Smith, Head of Communications at JustCover, said:
“Whether it’s a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Canadian Rockies or a local adventure closer to home, our research shows that our eyes are naturally drawn to mountain landscapes across the globe — and that visual connection often inspires our travel plans.”
She added that travellers exploring mountainous regions should always plan carefully, noting the unpredictable nature of high-altitude environments.
While the Canadian Rockies may have claimed first place, Table Mountain’s inclusion in the world’s most beautiful mountain ranges is a win for Cape Town — and a reminder that some of the world’s most captivating scenery is right on our doorstep.
For visitors, it’s often the defining image of their time in the Mother City. For locals, it’s a daily constant — grounding, familiar, and now officially world-class.
