A Sky Full of Courage: The 31st Cape Town International Kite Festival

Every October, the Cape Town sky transforms into a dazzling canvas of colour, creativity, and joy. This year, the Cape Town International Kite Festival returns for its 31st edition, carrying with it a powerful theme that feels especially relevant today: #CourageToFly.
From 25 – 26 October 2025, families, friends, and kite enthusiasts will gather at a brand-new venue – the Youngsfield Military Base in Ottery – for two days of uplifting fun, connection, and inspiration. This annual event raises funds for Cape Mental Health which funds essential free mental health services to those in need.
More Than Just Kites in the Sky
Since its beginnings in 1994, the festival has been far more than a playful day out. Organised by Cape Mental Health, it’s a beacon of hope, resilience, and unity. Every kite soaring high above the city is a reminder of the courage it takes to face life’s challenges – particularly when it comes to mental health. The event also celebrates the strength it takes to seek help, speak openly, and support those on their mental health journeys.
This year’s theme was chosen against the backdrop of recent global challenges – from political and social instability to the lingering effects of the pandemic – all of which have contributed to rising rates of anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions.
In South Africa, 16.5% of people live with a mental health condition, and stigma often prevents many from seeking the help they need. This festival raises both awareness and vital funds to support free mental health services across the Western Cape, making every fluttering kite a symbol of freedom, healing, and bravery.

A Festival for the Whole Family
The return of the full two-day format brings with it a renewed sense of excitement. Expect a spectacular showcase of kites from both local and international participants, entertainment for all ages, interactive kite-making workshops, delicious food stalls, and even an amusement park for children. It is designed to be a safe and joyful family outing, while also carrying a deeper message about the importance of mental health in building a resilient society.
So, it’s not just about watching the skies – it’s about creating memories, being part of a community, and sharing a moment of joy that lingers long after the kites have come down.

The Courage to Fly
Cape Mental Health’s CEO, Professor Doctor Ingrid Daniels, beautifully captures the heart of the festival: “Like a kite soaring against strong winds, people living with mental health conditions inspire us all to hold on, rise above, and find strength to persevere.”
Her words remind us that this celebration is as much about resilience as it is about fun. It’s an invitation to lift our eyes to the sky and recognise the strength within us all. Mental health awareness campaigns allow society to rise above the stigma and continue along a recovery journey despite inevitable challenges. Whether you are navigating mental health challenges yourself, or supporting a loved one who is, this kite festival is a chance to honour resilience.

Making a Difference Beyond the Weekend
The festival’s reach extends well beyond its October weekend. With community fly events like the Heideveld Community Fly, inclusive activities for all abilities, and the EduKite competition for schools, the message of courage and connection continues to spread throughout the year.
For those unable to attend in person, there’s still an opportunity to show support through the BackaBuddy campaign, ensuring that Cape Mental Health’s essential services remain accessible to those who need them most.
So, gather your loved ones, pack a picnic, buy some tickets, and prepare to look up. This year’s Cape Town International Kite Festival promises to be a weekend of beauty, bravery, and boundless skies.
