Be transported to the Orient at Chunky Chau in Rosebank
If you’re looking for a swanky setting to drink unique cocktails based on exotic black fruit tea infusions and eat a combination of (un)traditional Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean & Japanese cooking, then Chunky Chau restaurant in Rosebank at The Firs should be your next stop.
From the team that brought us Truffles on the Park in Sandown and clearly knows how to design a space, stepping into Chunky Chau is an Alice in Wonderland down the rabbit hole kind of experience. It offers some much-needed escapism from our chaotic lives. And if you think you can hear birds chirping and water gushing, you can. No detail has been left to chance with even the background music and audio contributing to a much-needed escape from reality – even if only for a few hours.
An Instagramable experience
The décor is eclectic and reels you in [all very Instagram ready and worthy] with high cushioned bar chairs and oversized golden yellow chesterfield couches that you could easily sink into and stay put for a while. A peacock theme permeates throughout the restaurant – from the hand-painted dining chairs to the impressive wingbacks to the 7-meter-tall custom-designed deep teal wallpaper wrapping across the ceiling and down the other side.
What did Mr Chau prepare for us?
Mr. Chau himself – an image of the friendly Smiling Buddha – sits welcoming and smiling on the inviting, red-lit bar – he has clearly tasted the menu and sipped cocktails behind that bar. This brings us to the food – a result of the creators’ extensive and inspired travel and experimental dining around Asia. Each dish is carefully created utilising the ancient arts of fermentation, curing, pickling & ageing – ensuring a delicate balance of sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami. Our only crit – there is just way too much to choose from, so we highly recommend letting the owner and wait staff guide you.
A very special touch is the re-imagined Japanese Bento Box concept – a visual delight with small portions served in custom-made wooden boxes with eclectic plating, mixing sushi and sashimi with delicious small plates like ginger-soy-chilli tossed edamame, sticky sesame chicken wings, grilled saucy pot stickers and so much more.
To love Chunky Chau is to experience it!
