So apparently if you eat cake fast enough, your Fitbit will think you’re walking, so like a French lady once said: let them eat cake!
And because we have some of the best local bakers around and we love celebrating Birthdays, we thought we would share a short list of our top two bakers in Joburg right now.
CakeDreama Michelle Berman
Michelle is self taught and incredibly committed to her craft, she pays attention to intricate detail and her passion is to bake a cake that speaks to you, that resonates with you.
What sets her apart is she wants to know you, who you are, what is important to you, your likes, your interests and she creates her masterpiece around you and your unique personality.
Then she works her magic (she is truly a magician) designs something artistic and voila oh and it will blow your taste buds off. She is also very happy to personalize any cake for you.
Cakedreama, essentially started off, by her simply making all her children’s birthday cakes, and on occasion cousins and grandparents too.
Then life happened, she needed a break and unfortunately her hubby lost his business and eventually went to a restaurateur for whom he’d worked many years ago and asked if he could have a job.
David got a management position… So, when the restaurateurs birthday needed to be celebrated, guess who baked him a cake?
She created a marvelous cake resembling a wooden board with a chocolate steak plate with a steak and sauce, chips and onion rings and yes everything was made of real chocolate. Hence why she started her baking journey again, “the intention was to make a little extra money but with lockdown, it’s really become my main source of income.”

Cakery at 39
Angela Meneses
Angela grew up in a household of bakers (her granny was a phenomenal baker) and there was always a cake, melt-in-your-mouth cookies or delicious fruit tarts in their kitchen.
For someone who spent her weekends baking, it is no wonder she creates the most beautiful and delectable buttercream treats. She even worked with her mum in her Home Industry in Birdhaven.
“I have grown up surrounded by sweet-smelling treats and my friends used to comment that our house always smelled of baking when they came to visit. says Angela.
And so Cakery at 39 was born. It all began when Angela baked a simple cake for her son and boom in July 2018 she began her business venture.
So whats in the name?
The name ‘Cakery at 39’ is a combination of three things, says Angela, “I was 39 when I started my business, I live at number 39 and the best part – my mum was 39 when she started baking commercially. It was meant to be!”
Her cakes are buttery, sugary enjoyment, worth every calorie and she is a pro at kiddies cakes, especially her beautiful smash cakes. Her smash cakes are perfection so much so we even want one for our birthday! You can taste her pure happiness poured into every cake she bakes and decorates.

ButterCream Cupcakery
Candice
Candice is one of those people that has always had a passion for creating something out of nothing. For someone who used to work in research and development for a beverage solution company and then giving birth to her daughter, she couldn’t bare the thought of leaving her and so, yip you guessed it, she bravely and boldly left her job and decided to start her own business, ButterCream Cupcakery.
“I always had a dream of starting a Cupcakery, I love tiny cakes. So October 2020 I launched ButterCream Cupcakery. What I love about my business is that I specialize in only cupcakes. I do love to do other baking for my family and friends but for now what makes me stand out and different to other home bakers is that I focus on cupcakes” says Candice.
She’s conquering the world one cupcake at a time and her bite sized heavenly parcels are out of this world, sweet, moist, moreish and oh so satisfying. Ensure you order extra!
