Beyond the Big Screen: NuMetro on Pricing, Diversity and What’s Next

NuMetro hosted an exclusive showcase at their theatre complex in Hyde Park Corner to highlight the new and upgraded immersive experiences offered by the cinema group. They took us on a deep dive into their VIP luxury offerings, cutting-edge 4DX screenings, and the first-in-Africa ScreenX. Most importantly, they spoke about ticket pricing, content diversity, and what is still to come for NuMetro cinemas countrywide.
NuMetro Positioning Itself as South Africa’s Cinema
Whilst the general public thinks that cinema attendance is on the decline, the opposite is true. Cinevation shared data that showed 2.1 million people go to the movies at least once a month. Furthermore, more than 4.6 million South Africans visit cinemas up to six times a year, while 2.4 million moviegoers visit cinemas at least a few times a year. In total, 9.1 million consumer-class adults go to the movies in South Africa.
These numbers prove that cinema is still relevant in the post-pandemic world, despite public opinion suggesting otherwise. Therefore, NuMetro is positioning itself as the official cinema market share leader in South Africa. Although they currently hold 38% of the market, their new cinema locations and latest upgrades are projected to grow this to 52%.
NuMetro Making Cinema Affordable Again
NuMetro spotlighted their strategic partnerships with financial institutions like Absa, Nedbank, Sanlam Reality, African Bank, Vodacom, and Momentum Multiply. This showcased efforts to make cinema outings more accessible through subsidy programs and loyalty club concessions.
“Cinema tickets for a family of four are now more affordable than they were in 2019,” remarked Menen Muthial, Business Analyst at NuMetro. They understand that price sensitivity is real, so with Partner Discounts, they are welcoming a new world of ticket discounts and special offers to a wider range of customers. This puts cinema entertainment into a very affordable bracket, as these partners have deep reach within the South African public.
Furthermore, when comparing the average movie ticket price of R135 for a 2D movie to the cost of an average cappuccino (R45–R55), an average rugby ticket (R120–R500), or streaming and data costs (R200+ per month), cinema proves itself to be an affordable entertainment option.

Hollywood & Local Content Coming to NuMetro
With an exciting lineup of Hollywood blockbusters set to release over the next 18 months, NuMetro is also shifting the spotlight toward homegrown talent. Andries Basson, Operations Executive for Nu Metro Films, affirmed a renewed commitment to premium local productions and robust partnerships with South African production houses. Bigger premieres, tailored events, and meaningful recognition are on the horizon for the country’s creatives.

More Than Movies: NuMetro as an Experience
Going above and beyond the normal cinema staple of popcorn and slushies, NuMetro has brought aboard Executive Chef David M., who will be overseeing gourmet menu offerings that elevate the VIP cinema experience. Now, you can order bites and bubbles while immersing yourself in your favourite movie space.
Last but not least, NuMetro revealed its plan to expand its footprint across South Africa and beyond its borders. They have acquired 20 cinema complexes, including new locations in Maputo (Mozambique) and Lusaka (Zambia). They will also be building new cinema complexes in Tygervalley and Mimosa Mall, while Bedford Square, Gateway, Cavendish, and Riverside have already received upgrades. Among the anticipated renovations is ScreenX, Africa’s first panoramic viewing experience using multi-projection technology to deliver a 270-degree screen—soon coming to Gateway.

South Africans now have every reason to choose NuMetro as their date night, friend get-together, or solo outing destination.
