We cannot wait for this brand new dedicated food hall to launch. We’re just devastated it’s not launching in Joburg first. But it’s okay Cape Town, you can take this one.

What can you expect: a contemporary food hall experience that revives the concept of the town square. The curated range of global cuisines on offer can be delivered on demand or enjoyed in the vibrant food hall, which emphasises quality ingredients, sustainability and affordability.

In the first quarter of 2022, South Africa’s newest food hall will open. Chefs Food Hall will use the country’s cuisine capital, Cape Town, as a natural starting point.

The marketplace, which will offer a range of cuisines under one roof, will be positioned in the city’s bustling Cavendish Square. To maximise cost efficiencies and the sustainability of the supply chain, ingredients for the food hall’s different stations will be collectively sourced, with a strong bias towards local produce.

“This, we believe, is the restaurant model of the future. By offering a carefully crafted range of cuisines, and by tapping into the desire for unique experiences, food halls present a more sustainable operating model,” Stevenson says.

As is the case in other markets, the fundamental shifts that were underway in South Africa’s food industry have been accelerated by the pandemic. The food hall, which is even more relevant as consumers prepare to socialise and connect once again, is an enticing solution.

The resurgence of the food hall is being driven by millennials and Gen-Z consumers, who tend to prefer experiences over goods, and who value inclusive spaces. And we have to agree with them, we cannot wait to visit this market-style eating experience.

The unique space allows people to gather and meet without the barriers of a traditional restaurants and an alternative to shopping centre food courts, offering consumers access to a world of food in one place.
