Cape Town’s Mountain Trails Just Got Safer with The Cobras

Cape Town mountain trails

If you are a hiker or a lover of the outdoors, you can take comfort in the fact that some of Cape Town’s mountain trails and hiking routes are now being patrolled by a private security company.

Introducing the Cobra Mountain Protection Team

The Cobras Mountain Protection Team, a privately funded initiative, is actively creating safer mountain experiences in Cape Town. Dedicated guards now patrol the routes around Camps Bay, Lion’s Head and Signal Hill, north of Table Mountain. In doing so, they are ensuring the security of both locals and tourists in these iconic natural spaces.

Businesses in the City Bowl and Atlantic Seaboard, including property developer Blok, along with private individuals, have collaborated to launch this initiative, coming together to make Cape Town’s mountains safer for everyone who explores them.

The Positive Impact of The Cobras

Since launching, The Cobras have successfully completed just over two months of patrols with impressive results. During these first two months, no violent crime incidents have been reported on the routes they oversee. This clearly shows that their presence strongly deters would-be criminals. In fact, the guards have also noticed a significant increase in mountain foot traffic on their routes. Indeed this seems to suggest that the public feels more confident exploring Cape Town’s outdoor wonders safely.

“Cape Town’s unique offering of world-class outdoor spaces is a treasure that we are committed to safeguarding as part of our ongoing urban interventions,” says Jacques van Embden, CEO of Blok. “By increasing the presence of patrols, together with The Cobra Mountain Protection Team, we aim to enhance the safety of everyone enjoying these beautiful trails.”

Marc Sternberg, a member of The Cobras management committee, adds: “We are very proud that The Cobra’s Mountain Protection Team initiative is live and securing these patrol routes. The objectives are to restore confidence in the mountain for mountain-goers and to act as a deterrent for would-be criminals. Residents and visitors to Cape Town should enjoy our beautiful mountain securely and with peace of mind.”

Collaborating for Safer Mountain Trails

Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront, Latitude Aparthotels, Timeless Africa Safaris, The Clarendon Boutique Hotel, HCI Foundation, Home Suite Hotels and Newmark Hotels and Reserves have joined Blok in this initiative. As a result of this collaboration, they are collectively promoting the safety and enjoyment of Cape Town’s natural wonders. Ultimately, they are also protecting the city’s reputation as one of the world’s top tourist destinations.

So, as you explore Cape Town’s breathtaking mountain trails, you can now enjoy your adventure with added peace of mind. When you’re out for a run, hike or mountain bike ride, look out for the team in grey camouflage and be sure to say hi to the friendly faces of The Cobras Mountain Protection Team.
