Eat Your Heart Out At Club Como: A Mediterranean Masterpiece

A Mediterranean atmosphere enveloped us as we stepped inside Club Como. It did not matter that we were standing in the middle of Morningside Shopping Centre in the forever chaotic city of Johannesburg. In fact, Club Como instantly transported us elsewhere.
Shell-lined curtains and deconstructed statues donning the walls contributed to a feeling of peace, with inviting hues and an intriguing sense of wander luring us in.

The Infamous Bar
The one-of-a-kind bar had a hypnotic effect with a glistening onyx backdrop. This feature was reminiscent of captured sunshine and displayed rows upon rows of delectable spirits. Furthermore, a glimpse into the kitchen revealed the masterminds behind perfectly curated plates floating around the restaurant, each garnished with an edible flower too pretty to consume.
The Mediterranean Setting
Nestled into a booth in the centre of the vibrant space, we scanned the expansive menu. Spotting cuisine from Greece, Portugal, Italy and Spain, there was something to satisfy every craving. Similarly, like with its magical power of transporting one to another place, Club Como also miraculously turns traditional dishes into fashionable feasts.
Sipping on a delightfully refreshing frozen Aperol Spritz, we glanced around the neighbouring tables. A business meeting had been elevated with seafood platters and crystal-like glasses with tequila on ice, scattered across the table. Two friends had just received their signature mains, gleefully squealing. The Lamb Chop Tomahawk looked delicious whilst the grilled prawns seemed just as delectable. Like a goddess on her thrown, a woman seated at a table in front of us was sipping on a cocktail complete with smoke plumes spiralling in every direction. Come to think of it, everyone looked powerful and pristine as they dined at Club Como.
Time for a Feast
Table stewards, managers and the gentlemanly owners all ensured that their patrons were informed when it came to the menu. In fact, recommendations came in all forms, depending on your preference. Whether it is meat, fish or vegetarian you’re after, Club Como has a thorough list of options for each. In the end, we decided on a collection of small plates instead of a main course, because we couldn’t stand the thought of not trying more than one dish.
Soon, our table was filled with small plates – Halloumi, drizzled with a hot honey butter, as well as Short Rib Arancini topped with grated Parmesan. Next, the enticing Fillet Hummus had us in awe. And, what followed was the signature mussels, drenched in a delicious, zesty limoncello broth. Additionally, the revolutionary deep-fried Tempura Prawn Sushi had us flying high. Of course, our sense of quality was redefined permanently by the homemade Greek Baklava. It was simply out of this world!
Apart from the extraordinary food and imaginative cocktails that danced around the dining space, it’s the intangible aspects of the experience that truly differentiate this restaurant from others. Like a magnet, it draws you in and before you know it, you’re hooked.
Even on this random Tuesday afternoon, Club Como was packed and an underlying current had everyone buzzing with an all-consuming energy. Most fascinatingly, this intense sensation lingered even long after we’d departed from Club Como, giving new meaning to a dining experience that leaves lasting impressions.
