The Takeaway

Are we prepared for the ‘Silly Season’? Well just to get your feet a little wet, we have a host of events in Johannesburg lined up over the coming weeks. Today let’s focus on Italy in South Africa with the upcoming Vino In Piazza event at Hyde Park Corner (THIS WEEKEND). A much anticipated annual event that showcases the very best on offer from the land of Pizza, Wine and Alfa Romeo. In this feature we’re going to breakdown what you can experience at the event and also give you some ideas on how to best celebrate 2021 in a uniquely African way at Chief’s Boma in Fourways.

Vino In Piazza - Wines of Italy

Hyde Park Corner 12 to 14 Nov 2021

“Vino in Piazza – Wines of Italy” is on of the premier events in Johannesburg, held this weekend at Hyde Park Corner and is the first event of the World Italian Cuisine for the year 2021.  The annual event organized in partnership by the Italian Embassy in Pretoria, the Consulate General of Italy in Johannesburg, the Italian Trade Agency and the Italian-South African Chamber of Trade and Industries.

The event will be attended by 19 Italian companies and wineries that will present their best Italian wines not yet present and marketed in South Africa. The event, organized on the occasion of the Week of Italian Cuisine in the World, will be an opportunity to get closer to the typical flavors of Made in Italy.

The weekend's lineup

• Friday 12 November 2021: from 15:00 to 21:00.

• Saturday 13 November 2021: from 10:00 to 21:00.

• Sunday 14 November 2021: from 10:00 to 16:00.

During these 3 days event and part of the “Week of  Italian Cuisine in the World” three Italian home chefs part of the “Cesarine” network (www.cesarine.com) – Alessandra, Cecilia and Corinna – will present their traditional pasta-based recipes from their regions in Italy: Emilia-Romagna, Toscana and Sardinia.

On Sunday 14 November at 12.00, the Michelin-starred Italian Chef Luciano Monosilio, owner of “Luciano Cucina Italiana” in Rome and also known as “The King of Carbonara”, will present his celebrated interpretation of this great Italian classic.

A public of 40 people will be admitted for each show and will try a little tasting of the dish presented. The show and tasting are included in the general ticket (up to capacity on a first-come, first-serve basis).

Three prestigious Italian restaurants will open a pop-up venue at Vino in Piazza (in a dedicated dining area) during the three days of the festival. They will sell to the public their specialties and some dishes designed specifically for our event. These restaurants are Fumo (Pretoria), Mastro – Don Armando (Johannesburg) and Stelle (Johannesburg).

Italy boasts a long winemaking tradition, which involves more than 310,000 grape producers and 46,000 wine producers.
