The braai tongs are already clicking in anticipation as entries open for the 2025 Braai Challenge at Capegate Shopping Centre. This September, the unmistakable aroma of wood smoke and sizzling meat will once again fill the air, marking the return of a Heritage Month favourite.
On September 6th, ten finalists will take their places for a sizzling showdown under the watchful eye of celebrity chef Bertus Basson. The champion will walk away with a prize package worth R30 000, including a two-night stay at Kol Kol Mountain Lodge.
The three-round elimination format will test contestants on South African braai staples:
Round 1: The ultimate boerewors roll – last year’s entries transformed the humble boerie into gourmet creations.
Round 2: The perfect steak, cooked to the judges’ specifications
Final Round: Signature dish showdown – a 2.5-hour cook-off following a high-energy R800 trolley dash through Checkers for fresh ingredients.
Judges will score on taste, creativity, technique, and presentation, with a focus on authentic South African flair.
Prizes include:
1st place: R30 000 prize package + Kol Kol Mountain Lodge stay
2nd place: R2 500 Capegate gift card
3rd place: R1 500 Capegate gift card
All finalists: Goodie bags from Capegate and Checkers
The winning recipe will also feature on the Capegate website during National Braai Day week for the community to recreate at home.
Open to South African residents over 18 living in Cape Town, with one entry per person. For more information and entries, click here.
Entries close on August 27th, 2025.

Tucked within the exclusive Korhaan River Estate, where fewer than 30 families share in the quiet luxury of open skies, river breeze and uninterrupted privacy, this remarkable property brings country living to life with elegance, intention, and a touch of soul.
Set along the gentle Leeuspruit River — just a short flow from the mighty Vaal — the estate unfolds across 70,500m² of manicured grounds, three shimmering dams, and sweeping lawns made for unhurried afternoons. It’s the kind of setting where mornings begin with birdsong and evenings settle beneath a canopy of stars — whether as a permanent sanctuary or a sophisticated weekend retreat from city rush.
