Destination Vienna
Join the Pretoria Symphony Orchestra for an enchanting journey to the City of Music in Destination Vienna!!
Vienna, home to some of history’s greatest composers, inspired masterpieces that continue to resonate today. In 1792, Beethoven moved to this city where he would remain until his passing in 1827. Among his many works, the Coriolan Overture, written in 1804 for Heinrich Joseph von Collin’s tragedy Coriolanus, stands out. This intense and poignant piece captures the dramatic arc of Coriolanus’ fall through its evocative musical motifs.
Franz Schubert’s Tragic Symphony (Symphony No. 4) premiered posthumously in 1849, 21 years after his death. Composed when Schubert was just 19, this symphony distinguishes itself with its solemn tone and innovative harmonic progressions.
The afternoon will also feature a performance of a work by another famed Viennese resident, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. During his time in Vienna, Mozart composed many of his most celebrated pieces, including the Horn Concerto No. 3 in E-flat major, K. 447.
