No ballet touches the heart, captures spirit and allows the emotions to take flight quite like Romeo and Juliet. It is an immortal tale of star-crossed love that will move and thrill you with its soaring splendour, riveting drama and unforgettable beauty.
Joburg Ballet brings this famous love story to the Joburg Theatre for just eight performances between 30 June and 9 July 2023. Inspired by William Shakespeare’s tragic tale, the heart-rending saga unfolds against a passionate vendetta between two families in Renaissance Italy. The grand vistas of the city of Verona provide the setting for a blend of magnificent music by Sergei Prokofiev and sweeping choreography to tell an immortal tale of young love.
An impressive line-up of dancers has been announced for the leading and supporting roles with several debut performances scheduled during the season.
Shannon Glover returns as Juliet, a role she has danced previously. In addition, audiences can look forward to debuts from Nicole Ferreira-Dill, Monike Cristina and Chloé Blair. Revil Yon, Armando Barros, Ruan Galdino and Gabriel Fernandes will be dancing Romeo for the first time.
Furthermore, Joburg Ballet has invited Vuyani Dance Theatre, Jozi Dance Company and the Joburg Ballet Academy to appear with Joburg Ballet in Romeo and Juliet, giving added grandeur to the scenes that call for a large cast such as the ballroom and the acts set in Verona’s city squares.
