Largest Marimba Ensemble Guinness World Record Attempt
In a bold celebration of unity, rhythm, and youthful joy, more than 1000 marimba players from across South Africa and Zimbabwe will gather at GrandWest’s Grand Arena on Saturday, 2 August 2025 to attempt a Guinness World Records™ title for the Largest Marimba Ensemble.
Under the banner “United in Harmony”, this historic moment aims to more than double the current record of 505 players held by Guatemala — placing South Africa firmly in the global spotlight with a joyful explosion of culture, music, and community. Performers, aged 8 to 62, will represent over 70 schools and institutions from every province in South Africa — joined by two Zimbabwean schools. Some will travel thousands of kilometres, with marimbas loaded onto trucks or flown in just hours after school events like matric dances. Every marimba matters in a record-breaking moment like this. This isn’t Marimba Jam’s first bid for the title. In 2018, they unofficially broke Australia’s record with 241 girls on Women’s Day — but lacked the official Guinness recognition.
The 10-minute performance will feature a medley of “Waka Waka” and “Jerusalema” — two anthems of South African spirit and solidarity. Let’s make history together — one marimba at a time. Stay for a celebration concert with GoodLuck, live art installations, djembe workshops, VR experiences, and a medal ceremony where every participant receives an official Guinness World Records™ medallion.
