Cape Town artist Freya Willemoes-Wissing is unveiling Love Unbound, an audacious art exhibition that challenges South Africa’s antiquated marriage laws while advocating for polyandry. This thought-provoking exhibit will be hosted at the AVA Gallery from October 10 to December 1, 2024, aiming to reshape the nation’s perceptions of relationships and marriage.
Central to Love Unbound is a powerful critique of South Africa’s legal framework, which permits polygyny (where men can marry multiple wives) but prohibits polyandry (where women can marry multiple husbands). This disparity underscores a deeply rooted patriarchy, constraining women’s autonomy in choosing their partners. Freya’s exhibition advocates for a more inclusive understanding of relationships, asserting that women should have the same rights as men to love freely.
Through striking artwork, Freya confronts the injustices faced by women in marriage, exposing societal pressures that confine them to traditional roles as wives, mothers, and workers. The exhibit celebrates the strength and resilience of polyandrous families, demonstrating that they can lead fulfilling, meaningful lives outside conventional norms.
