National Arts Festival

A cornerstone of South Africa’s cultural landscape, the National Arts Festival has been a vibrant annual celebration of the arts since 1974. Held in its Eastern Cape hometown of Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown), this multi-disciplinary festival has become one of the country’s most significant artistic gatherings.

Born during apartheid, the NAF emerged as a powerful platform for protest and artistic expression. Over the decades, it has showcased groundbreaking work, adapted to global challenges by going digital during the pandemic, and triumphantly returned to live performances. Now, as it approaches its 51st year, the Festival continues to evolve—shaping and reflecting the ever-changing face of the arts.

At its core, the National Arts Festival champions the belief that the arts help us make sense of the world, forge deeper connections, inspire transformation, and find meaning in shared experiences. From captivating comedy to moving dance, thought-provoking theatre, inspiring poetry, and enriching family entertainment, the National Arts Festival in Makhanda offers an unparalleled cultural experience this winter.
