Sarafina!
Joburg Theatre proudly presents a powerful reimagining of the internationally acclaimed musical Sarafina!—a tribute to the enduring legacy of the Ngema family.
Set during a pivotal moment in South African history, Sarafina! does more than entertain—it uplifts and empowers. Staged in honour of Women’s Month, the production pays homage to the fearless women who stood at the forefront of the struggle for freedom. Through compelling storytelling and music, it shines a light on the resilience, bravery, and unwavering spirit of South Africa’s ‘she-roes.’
Originally conceived, written, and directed by the legendary Dr. Mbongeni Ngema—with additional music by the iconic Hugh Masekela—Sarafina! has become a cultural landmark. Its vibrant score and emotionally charged lyrics continue to resonate with audiences across generations.
The story unfolds at Morris Isaacson High School in Soweto, echoing the powerful student uprisings of 1976, when nearly 200,000 young voices rose in defiance of apartheid’s oppressive education policies. Through song, dance, and raw emotion, Sarafina! captures the hope, courage, and determination of a generation fighting for justice.
