Waddle For The African Penguin

In just a century, the population of African penguins has plummeted from over 1.5 million to fewer than 10,000 pairs today. Their plight is critical, and despite the efforts of numerous dedicated organizations working tirelessly to ensure their survival, African penguins still require public backing to secure the necessary policies and protections to prevent extinction.

To support this campaign, the Two Oceans Aquarium, SANCCOB, CapeRADD, and I AM WATER invite the community to participate in a “waddle” from Muizenberg to Simon’s Town on 12 October 2024, in honor of African Penguin Awareness Day. There will also be a shorter route available for families with children or those who may not be able to walk the entire distance.

Event Details:

Date: Saturday, October 12, 2024
Full Route (16 km): Gather at Surfer’s Corner, Muizenberg, by 8:30 AM
Short Route (approx. 4 km): Meet at Long Beach, Simon’s Town, at 11:30 AM
Finish: Both routes will converge and pass by Boulders Beach, concluding at Water’s Edge, Simon’s Town, around 1 PM.

Preparation:

  • Dress Code: Please wear black and white.
  • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
  • Supplies: Bring water in reusable bottles and some snacks in reusable bags—no plastic, please.

Get Creative: Craft your own signs to raise awareness using these fantastic placards.

Prizes: Many spot prizes will be available for participants, including a prize for the “best-dressed” waddler!
