Things to see on the banks of the Orange River
The only big city the Orange River passes through is Upington in the Northern Cape. Here you can visit a life-sized bronze monument of a donkey – a sculpture that symbolises donkeys’ contributions in developing the Lower Orange River Valley when pioneers still roamed the area.
Kanoneiland outside of Upington is one of the only islands in the river. It’s also the largest inhabited island in South Africa and definitely worth a visit. Also be sure to taste some wines from Orange River Cellars.
With a holiday resort where you can boat, fish and relax, the Gariep Dam is another must-visit attraction along the Orange River. While it is the largest dam on the Orange River, it is also the largest in the country.
Of course, the Augrabies Falls in Augrabies Falls National Park is a sight to behold, especially when in flood. Its original Khoikhoi name, Ankoerebis means ‘place of big noises.’
Another must-see is the mission station of Pella. This oasis town is known for its beautiful Catholic Cathedral and delicious dates.

Order on the border
A rather large part of the Orange River forms the border between South Africa and Namibia. One of the only ferries in the country – crossing the river between the two countries – can be found at Sendelingsdrift at the Richtersveld National Park’s main gate.
Vioolsdrift (South Africa) and Noordoewer (Namibia) are the main border posts on the Orange River. This is where the N7 from Cape Town to Namibia ends.
Last, but not least, the hamlet of Onseepkans north of Pofadder is a seldomly used border post with a quirky pink shop for basic supplies. Look out for the jalopy at the entrance.
