In a world of fast fashion and fleeting trends, FIELDS stands apart — rooted in integrity, artistry, and sustainability. The South African menswear brand, celebrated for its quiet sophistication and considered craftsmanship, has opened its first Johannesburg store at 44 Stanley, an enclave known for its creative energy and independent spirit.
“Johannesburg is the heartbeat of South Africa. The people are alive, engaging and supportive. Opening here simply feels right.” — Founder and Creative Director Mikael Hanan
Designed in collaboration with interior designer Lei Lester, the Johannesburg store mirrors FIELDS’ ethos of mindful living and timeless design. Every detail encourages conversation, reflection, and connection — values that lie at the heart of the brand.
The new FIELDS boutique fits seamlessly into the fabric of 44 Stanley, a precinct that champions collaboration, authenticity, and community. “44 Stanley shows us a South Africa we are proud of,” said Hanan. “It’s a place built on curation, connection, and authenticity. It brings together people of every age and background in a way that reflects how we want to live today. That’s exactly the environment we want to be part of.”
Inside the boutique, visitors can explore the full ready-to-wear collection, accessories, and seasonal drops. Furthermore, browse limited edition pieces created with African artists and artisans — a nod to FIELDS’ enduring celebration of creativity and culture.
Since its founding in 2019 by Mikael Hanan, FIELDS has redefined modern menswear — creating clothing for men who value substance over status. Organised into three distinctive lines — Soul, Art, and Outdoor — each collection represents a facet of contemporary masculinity: introspection, creativity, and a connection to nature.
At its core, FIELDS is about longevity and purpose. The brand designs with the intention that each piece lasts for decades, not just seasons — somewhat of a collector’s paradise, if you will. This slow-fashion philosophy earned FIELDS the Trans-Seasonal Award at the 2021 TWYG Sustainable Fashion Awards, recognising its commitment to sustainable craftsmanship and timeless style.
Each season, FIELDS also collaborates with artists from across Africa, turning art into wearable stories. Through limited-edition jacquard knitwear, the brand invites wearers to “live in the art they so appreciate,” collecting pieces that evolve with them over the years. Framed on the walls are pieces from these artists, acting as a muse for those who walk through FIELDS’ doors.
FIELDS crafts its garments exclusively from natural fibres. These materials are chosen for their comfort, breathability, and renewability. Every fibre tells a story of place and care.
From knitwear to woven cotton and denim, FIELDS’ fabrics are carefully refined through ongoing collaboration with Southern African mills and artisans. Each choice is guided by sustainability, comfort, and quality — an approach that honours the land and the hands that shape it.
FIELDS takes pride in producing its collections through a network of specialist Southern African factories. These precincts uphold the highest standards of craftsmanship, fair pay, and dignity for all employees.
From spinning to sewing, the brand’s garments are woven, knitted, cut, and finished across South Africa — particularly in the Western Cape — allowing close oversight of every stage of production. Regular collaboration ensures minimal waste, refined quality, and improved techniques with each collection.
Some factories specialise exclusively in trousers, others in knitwear or accessories, ensuring excellence through expertise. Even FIELDS’ tote bags are made from fabric off-cuts, stitched by independent artisans who work from home as part of a fair and flexible employment network.
This local, hands-on approach allows FIELDS to not only maintain impeccable quality but also sustain the South African garment industry. This is a cornerstone of the brand’s mission to make fashion that’s both beautiful and responsible.
Every FIELDS collection celebrates art and collaboration. For Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer 2025 collections, the brand partners were the hand-weaving collective The Ninevites, and South African artist Gabrielle Kruger, respectively.
Kruger’s experimental use of acrylic paint blurs the lines between painting and sculpture, inspired by the textures of landscapes and gardens — both wild and tamed. The Ninevites, founded by Nkuli Mlangeni-Berg, weave mohair rugs in Prince Albert, guided by heritage, sustainability, and empowerment.
“From blending in to stepping up, this collection is about showing up, taking action, and making an impact — within our communities, families, and the world at large. It’s about connection, contribution, and being mindful of the change we can create, together,” says FIELDS.
FIELDS’ expansion to Johannesburg is more than a milestone — it’s a continuation of a journey that celebrates art, sustainability, and authentic living. The new 44 Stanley boutique embodies everything the brand stands for: slow fashion, local craft, and timeless design for the modern man.
