Get your skin holiday-ready with Dr. Saffia Jacobs, owner, and qualified Aesthetic Doctor at Ameliore
Meet Dr. Saffia Jacobs
Dr. Saffia Jacobs commenced her medical career in the public health sector, dedicating 9 years to the trenches of public health care. When COVID hit, like many professionals during the pandemic, she found herself on the frontlines facing difficult choices. The long hours in healthcare were taking a toll on her family and affecting her quality of life. Taking a leap of faith in 2020, Dr. Jacobs opened her practice in Dunkeld, Jhb. Here, she offered GP consultations along with aesthetic procedures. It wasn’t long before she realized that aesthetics was her passion, and from this passion, Ameliore Beauty and Aesthetics was born.
What is the ethos behind Ameliore Beauty and Aesthetics?
For Dr. Saffia Jacobs, the driving force behind what she does is seeing women leave her aesthetic practice feeling beautiful, empowered, and confident. The name Ameliore is French and means ‘improve’ or ‘enhance.’ Dr. Jacobs aims to provide services to her patients to naturally enhance their unique beauty. Taking the time to get to know each patient individually, she provides a holistic beauty experience. In today’s busy world, Dr. Jacobs wanted to create what a patient once told her, now coined as the tagline for the practice: ‘an oasis for cosmic butterflies,’ a place for women to relax, enjoy self-care, rest, and leave feeling rejuvenated.
Tips on choosing an aesthetic practice
- Make sure that the person performing treatments is a qualified medical doctor registered with the HPCSA. – Don’t be shy to ask; this is your face!
- Ask if they have qualifications and experience with aesthetic medicine.
- Cheaper is not always better; you know the saying “You get what you pay for.” Cheaper could mean poor-quality products or an unqualified person performing aesthetics. This could lead to long-term damage.
- A quick check on Google reviews or Instagram could tell you all you need to know about an aesthetic practice.
- Book a consultation first to discuss and manage your expectations; this will also allow you to get to know your beauty aesthetician.
We often feel overwhelmed with the huge amount of beauty products available on the market.
How to get your skin in tip-top condition for the holidays
Great skin always begins with great home care. Dr. Jacobs recommends re-evaluating your current skincare routine as we move into the warmer months. With the increase in temperatures, it is best to avoid thick oily moisturizers, cleanse twice a day (morning and night), and remember the Golden Rule: never go to bed with your makeup on! If you are going to be out and about in the sun, sunscreen is non-negotiable, a minimum of SPF50 broad spectrum, mineral, not chemical, with UVA and UVB protection, such as Heliocare, should be your best friend this summer. Remember to reapply your sunscreen if you are outdoors for an extended period, and good hydration is key to great skin; drink your water, girls!
Dr. Jacobs's recommendations for in-clinic skin treatments leading up to the holidays
Prepare in advance; if you are going coastal, don’t do any medium to deep skin peels for at least three months before traveling. Stick to superficial chemical peels, which will leave your skin looking and feeling fresh.
Anti-wrinkle injectables take a minimum of two weeks to take full effect and for you to see results. The same applies to fillers; you will need at least two weeks for any swelling and bruising to settle.
At any beauty clinic 15 November to 20 December is the busiest time of year, so be sure to book your treatments well in advance to avoid disappointment.
This time of year is also a great opportunity to discuss your skin and aesthetic goals for next year.
