Going Green – Top Green Venues in South Africa

South Africa is at the forefront of sustainable green initiatives. In fact, the country is known for its natural resources, not to mention its incredible landscapes of greenery. With the ever-evolving dynamic of trends, various local venues have identified a trend that is here to stay: Going green.

Eco-friendly venues and destinations with a responsibility toward the environment are increasing in popularity and it makes sense. There is a high demand for venues that operate sustainably and these destinations have had to adapt their practices accordingly. Here are some venues that have impressed us:

Kraak

Have you ever experienced the beauty of Kraak in Wellington? The outdoorsy venue holds beauty in every avenue of its grounds. In fact, the word that describes it best is ‘organic,’ with Kraak’s beliefs being simple and intentional. It’s all about barefoot luxury, slow living and intentional, considered events.

For more information, email hannes@kraak.co.za.

Babylonstoren

One of the oldest Dutch farms in Franschhoek, Babylonstoren is exceptional, to say the least. Boasting a botanically diverse fruit and vegetable garden and a farm-style hotel – whitewashed, elegant and authentic – it’s the perfect green venue for your next event. Babylonstoren’s restaurants’ menus change with the season, with the chefs taking advantage of organic foods grown on-site. Additionally, with a short shuttle ride, you’ll reach Soetmelksvlei – an authentic 19th century farmyard worth exploring. For more information, phone +27 (0)21 863 3852 or email reservations@babylonstoren.com.

Ground The Venue

Ground The Venue is ready for any kind of celebratory experience to be had. From weddings and events to picnics, hikes and dining. The Cronje family farm is the place to be for the great outdoors and it boasts tranquility at its finest. Due to its outdoor nature, it has made our list of top green venues. Call 063 296 2274 or email iInfo@projectground.co.za for more information.

Wingrove Valley

Wingrove Valley is situated in Pietermaritzburg. This secluded and quaint family-run, farm-style venue is ideal for weddings. The lush green venue is hidden in a beautiful valley and offers nature’s serenity with the added bonus of being located next to the river. It has earned its spot on our list of green venues with its eco-friendly and sustainable catering options.

Intundla

Intundla is a bush-style venue based in Pretoria – a top pick for green venues in South Africa due to its various sustainable offerings. In addition to their bush-style spa, lodge and venue, they have planted their own organic vegetable garden, and make use of a worm farm to dispose of scraps. Their kitchen is fully organic and their staff are encouraged to make sustainable choices beyond the walls of the venue too. Phone 012 735 9913 or email info@intundla.co.za for more information.

The complexity of event organising resonates with anyone in the industry. It’s important to give your clients what they wish for. Going green is doable with these handy tips:

Conserve water with JoJo tanks. This is especially helpful during months with high rainfall. In addition, it also eliminates water wastage.

If guests are unable to stay on-site at the venue, consider offering a shuttle service in order to reduce air pollution.

Single-use plastics have become a big no-no in the events industry. From brochure covers to name badge holders and water bottles. Tick each one off the list by using a recycled or reusable option.

Caterers are increasingly utilising organic options. Try to make this a pre-requisite for any vendor.

Go digital. It just makes sense in the era of information.

We applaud the venues making a difference in our country and we encourage readers to support sustainability.
