Grande Roche Hotel: A Timeless Gem Amidst the Vines
Written by: Justyn Spinner
Tucked away in the heart of the Cape Winelands, Grande Roche Hotel stands as a testament to the rich history of Paarl. The historic manor house, dating back to the early 1700s, exudes a timeless charm that draws travellers to step into a world where heritage meets modern luxury.
With its commanding position on the Grande Roche wine estate, the hotel offers breathtaking panoramic views of Paarl and the majestic mountain peaks that frame the horizon. It’s a sight to behold, especially at sunrise when the vineyards are bathed in a golden glow.
Recent changes at Grande Roche have only enhanced its appeal. The property has undergone a multi-million rand refurbishment and the results are nothing short of spectacular.
The terrace suites, a beloved feature of the hotel, have been completely transformed. While they now boast a contemporary aesthetic, the suites have retained their warm, homely atmosphere. Furthermore, the eighteen terrace suites are spacious, with private lounge areas, full en-suite bathrooms and master suites with king size beds. And, the thatched roofs and classic country décor, thoughtfully preserved by acclaimed interior designer, Misi Overturf, ensure that guests feel enveloped in the rich heritage of the property while enjoying all the modern comforts expected of a five-star boutique hotel.
Grande Roche has also elevated its culinary offerings, thanks to the talented Chef Christiaan Campbell and his experienced team. In essence, Chef Christiaan’s vision was to create an all-day dining experience that is both refined and approachable. So, the menu he has crafted is a celebration of hearty, yet stylish dishes that cater to both light lunches and full, satisfying meals. It’s perfect after a day of exploring the nearby Paarl and Stellenbosch wine regions.
A highlight of our visit was the slow-braised beef croquettes, elegantly paired with whole grain mustard cream and pickled red onion. The dish was perfectly complemented by the Under Oaks Barrel Select Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, with its subtle notes of berry, plum and dark chocolate.
Pair Your Drink with a Cigar
No visit to Grande Roche would be complete without indulging in their drinks and cigar menu. For those who appreciate the finer things, the Creation Dessert Cape Vintage, with its honeyed fruit and black cherry notes, is a must-try, especially when paired with a Cohiba Siglo 1. The cigar’s bold flavours of wood and spice, finishing with a hint of caramel, make for a luxurious after-dinner experience that’s hard to forget.
Grande Roche isn’t just a boutique hotel; it’s a journey through time, luxury and the rich culture of the Cape Winelands. Whether you’re visiting for the history, the views or the gourmet dining, Grande Roche promises an experience that’s both enriching and indulgent.
