Hazendal Festival: Art, Soil and Family Fun
Looking to break free from the typical weekend routine? Hazendal Wine Estate is redefining your idea of weekend fun with its first-ever Hazendal Festival – an event that promises to be more than just another wine tasting experience. Running from 4 to 6 October, the unique festival will bring together art, culture and a celebration of soil – the life-giving material that connects us all.
Curated by visionary Khanyisile Mbongwa, the festival’s theme – Soil Edition – explores the deeper meaning of soil as a living archive. Guided by the Nguni proverb, ‘Belele nje, Abathulunga’ (they may be asleep, but they are not quiet), this edition reflects on the stories that soil holds from the past, present and future. So, this weekend will be all about experiencing creative interventions and engaging with the land in a transformative way.
Here are ten reasons why we think you need to make your way to the Hazendal Festival this weekend:
Where the Art Is
Creativity is at the heart of the inaugural Hazendal Festival. From sculptural commissions by Cape Town artist, Thania Petersen, to live interventions by Sethembile Msezane, the artworks will reflect a deep connection with the land. One standout piece is Sisonke Papu’s installation, ‘ISIKHUMBUZ: Pillar of Remembrance,’ which delves into the spiritual bond between humanity, nature and the cosmos. In addition, a gallery exhibition featuring prominent South African artists, like Lady Skollie and Inga Somdyala, will round off the immersive artistic experience.
Soil, Symposium and Science
For those looking for some intellectual stimulation, the festival’s symposium will offer in-depth discussions on the connection between land and heritage. Led by curator Lungi Morrison, it will bring together artists, scientists and academics to explore how our relationship with the land can inspire change. From biotechnology experts to cultural curators, the symposium promises to broaden your perspective on our shared responsibilities toward the earth.
Storytelling Through Dance
Furthermore, the Hazendal Festival will feature a unique storytelling experience through the Camissa Heritage Tour, choreographed by renowned South African director Luke de Kock. With sixteen performers, this dance production is set to take you through the history of South Africa’s indigenous Cape communities. And, for those who want to learn more, Luke will also host a dance workshop during the symposium.
Fun for the Little Ones at the Hazendal Festival
Kids won’t be left out of the experience either. Visual artist, Faatimah Mohamed-Luke has designed creative workshops for children, allowing them to connect with the environment through play and hands-on activities. Hosted at Hazendal’s interactive Wonderdal, the kids’ programme will run in tandem with the adult events, making the festival a family-friendly affair.
Food and Wine Delights
Hazendal is known for its rich winemaking tradition. Hence, it’s only natural that this weekend will feature exclusive wine and vodka tastings. Culinary enthusiasts will enjoy a home-grown dinner crafted by celebrated Zulu chef, Vusi Ndlovu and Hazendal’s Head Chef, Michelle Theron. Ndlovu, a founding member of the African Culinary Library, will bring his signature touch to this memorable dining experience.
Hands-On Workshops
Roll up your sleeves and get involved with practical workshops, including one hosted by Tapiwa Guzha of Cape Town’s Tapi Tapi ice cream shop. Through food, Guzha encourages attendees to engage in discussions about Afro-identity and colonial legacies, all while tasting some delicious creations.
Film Screenings
Then, for film buffs, the festival offers a curated selection of short films, including Motlhaba Wa Re Ke Namile by Lerato Shadi. This film will take audiences on a semi-fictitious journey through a timeless South African town. Eventually, with its mix of documentary and fiction, these screenings will leave you pondering long after the credits roll.
A Special Edition Hazendal MCC Label
Art and wine come together with the launch of a special edition Hazendal MCC (Méthode Cap Classique) label, designed by renowned artist, Athi-Patra Ruga. Known for his bold and vibrant works, Ruga’s design elevates the wine label into a piece of art, perfect for collectors and wine lovers alike.
Hazendal Picnic Baskets
For a more laid-back experience, why not enjoy a picnic on Hazendal’s scenic lawns? Filled with artisan breads, fresh salads and tasty selections of cheeses and meats, these baskets are perfect for unwinding between festival events. Book yours in advance for a relaxing afternoon under the trees.
Into the Night
Finally, as the day winds down, the festivities heat up with live music and DJ performances. Dance the night away to a mix of afro and deep house beats from DJs Daddy, Gontse and Ghost Bunny. Paired with food and drink offerings that celebrate the richness of the soil, the evening promises to be a feast for the senses.
Whether you’re an art lover, a foodie or simply looking for a unique family outing, the Hazendal Festival – Soil Edition is set to offer something unforgettable for everyone. Make sure to book your spot and experience this exciting fusion of culture, creativity and community.
