For those keen on exploring the Hoedspruit area, we recently came across a lovely luxury lodge – Safari Moon – which is the perfect base to venture out from. Even Tom Cruise approves, having stayed there during his recent filming trip to South Africa!
While Safari Moon offers their guests the option of going on a Big 5 Safari in the adjacent Balule Reserve, there are various other types of safaris to go on in the area too.
A highlight of our two-day stay at Safari Moon was a visit to the Blyde River Canyon and a ‘river safari’ with Blyde Dam Boat Trips. The natural wonders amidst the area’s four different biomes are absolutely fascinating and you are sure to leave there with some interesting stories to tell.

Take a self-drive safari into the Kruger National Park. This is something we recommend you do at least once in your life. If you’re not keen on a self-drive experience, Safari Moon would be more than willing to assist in booking a full-day private Kruger Park safari.
Furthermore, you can also visit some of the local working citrus farms with Primos Gin. Listen to stories about these working farms, learn about the different phases of fruit cultivation and enjoy it all against the backdrop of the Drakensberg Mountain Range. Finally, enjoy a taste of locally produced gin with delicious snacks as the grand finale.
Panorama Pedals has a couple of cycling safaris on offer in the area, including citrus farm exploration and the Panorama Route. This is a unique and exciting way to explore the area – an activity worth adding to your travel bucket list.
All or Nothing Adventures can also take you on a Mariepskop Safari. Mariepskop is the highest point of the Drakensberg in the Hoedspruit area and there is actually an open vehicle that will take you right to the top. Remember to pack your binos, because you might be able to spot the Narina Trogon while driving through the rain forest. You can also opt for a full day Mariepskop picnic with Big 5 Safaris.
