How to plan the best business retreat ever

How to plan the perfect business retreat

In our Festive Season issue, we recommend different destinations and retreat ideas to tap into as the year draws to a close. From cliffside stays and wine farm retreats, to out-of-the-box, bold cruising options and sandy beaches, our recommendations will have you dreaming up the perfect business retreat in no time.

With more and more people working remotely these days, the opportunity to connect in person has become invaluable. In fact, creating a space where employees, company leaders and teams can reconnect, regroup and reignite their enthusiasm is probably one of the best things you can do for your business.

Tips for planning a business retreat

That said, planning a business retreat takes a lot of skill and effort. Hence, we’ve compiled a list of tips for the retreat planners out there. This should help get you on your way…

Welcome party as part of business retreat

Our first tip is to plan with intention and attention. No one wants just another boring, boozy breakaway.

Get the people hyped ahead of time. Start a countdown and send out retreat teasers.

Let the team be part of the planning process. Dave might be able to capture footage with his drone, and Alyson might be able to arrange some boardgames.

Kick off the retreat with a welcome party – that should break the ice, especially for those who haven’t seen each other in ages or those who haven’t met before.

Choose somewhere where the outdoors is easily accessible. While a retreat is ideal for catching up on where the company is going, you also want to make sure that the team spends ample time in nature.

Explore a city, an art tour or a museum together. According to HelpScout, walking meetings make for better conversations and lead to deeper connections.

Make sure that the retreat allows time for team time. This is particularly important for teams that normally work remotely.

At the same time, making time for cross-team time is just as important. This allows different departments to discuss product roadmaps, marketing and ideas.

Have experts in their fields share some knowledge in deep diving sessions. This not only sheds some light on team members, but other team members get to learn new things and might just feel inspired.
