Hold on to your hats (or cones) as the new season calls for new dining destinations in the City of Gold, as well as established eateries with brand-new offerings. Here are but a few of the exciting dining opportunities that will have foodies worth their salt flocking to its foyers.
Math Restaurant
Located at Waterfall Corner, Math™ Restaurant (which opened its doors in May this year) brings diners much more than just a dining experience. In fact, they offer a tribute to a rich history of entrepreneurship and community engagement – one that stretches back nearly fifty years. Owner, Puleng Mathabatha drew inspiration from his parents’ hardware store in Lebowakgomo, which was established in 1974. He says it was more than a business; it was the heart of the township and a place where the community gathered and shared stories. Evidently, the name, Math™ also represents the first four letters of his family’s surname. This symbolises the legacy that drives his hospitality venture.
At Math™, you can expect a fusion of tradition and innovation – from comfort classics to daring culinary experiments. In fact, each dish tells a story and is bound to encourage engagement. The menu is inspired by everything from the streets of New York to the humble home-cooked favourites South Africans know and love.
Math™ is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and is all about community, legacy and shared experiences among friends and families. “It’s been a journey that’s taken time, dedication and a deep connection to my family’s history,” says Mathabatha. “To see Math™ become a reality is incredibly fulfilling – like seeing the pieces of a long-awaited puzzle finally come together. Just a year ago, I couldn’t have imagined that we’d be here, but everything is aligning in a way that feels like it’s meant to be. This is more than a restaurant; it’s a living embodiment of our commitment to honouring the past while building a vibrant community. The entire concept is fuelled by the spirit of togetherness and the enduring legacy that my family has created.”

Kanpai
Apt for any celebration, this restaurant on the Keyes Art Mile has a Japanese name resonates with anyone who wants to raise a glass. The word, Kanpai, is often used as a toast or a celebratory exclamation when raising glasses. In English, we’d normally say: Cheers! Kanpai opened its doors late last year and have since created a loyal following of foodies who enjoy all things sushi, tapas and bubbles, Asian style.
As is the aim of any worthy restaurant, their goal is to get people to get together, engage, share laughter and exceptional food and of course, clink their glasses. All in all, this is where every detail is crafted to spark joy.
Kanpai’s chef recommended special menu includes items like Infused Salmon Sashimi infused with a Yuzu Soya and Edamame Beans; Silky Tofu, Crisp Chili, Scallions and Cured Egg Yolk; and more. Also keep an eye out for their Shrimp and Sushi Combo and an impressive array of drinks.
