Our ultimate list of new restaurants in Joburg 2022

Zoui Sandton

Can you guess which city we are currently obsessed with?

Our very own Jozi. And nothing is hotter right now than our foodie scene, post pandemic there are brand new eateries popping up on every corner, so we’ve spent 2022 eating our way through the streets of Jozi.

Eventually we came up with our ultimate list of new restaurants in Joburg right now and here they are!

1. The Fat Zebra - Parkhurst

Fat Zebra storefront on 4th Ave Parkhurst

This excellent new dining destination shouldn’t come as a surprise if you have visited their other shop in Linden. Basically there isn’t anything you wont dig about this restaurant chain. Not only does it have the coolest name on the block but the dishes are delightful too. So we were extremely excited to visit their newest addition.

What to eat: their victorious chicken peri-peri prego roll with crispy, crunchy potatoes and their chocolate brownie for dessert is next level delectable.

What to drink: order a bottle of Zbubbles- their very own bubbly brand. Too cool!Try the 2016 Blanc de blanc, it is pretty fantastic. And yes of course you can take a bottle home with you!

The mood: low key epitome of the word sassy. Trendy and darn comfortable oh and you can crowd-watch all day long.

2. Zioux - Sandton

Start from the top of the ultimate restaurants and you might as well never eat anywhere else, right?

Well we hate to break it to you but every ounce of this magnificent newly opened 400 square metre restaurant space oozes deep into your subconscious and clings to your memory bank. This is Jozi’s newest showstopper.

The same buzz happened when they opened Saint and now this newest venture, which the city so desperately needed, will fast become your favorite new luxurious hangout.

What to eat: So it is small plate dining. We recommend you order at least 4 plates per person. The menu is Peruvian inspired and is rather enticing, it is truly impossible to select just four, however we shall try.

Order the tempura style tofu steamed buns, the beetroot aguachile salad with walnuts and ricotta, the lamb shoulder tacos with a herbed guac and the cauliflower with cumin, capers and sultanas. Oh and the corn with lime feta and coriander as a side, needs to be a main.

What to drink: The Zioux signature cocktail- The Agua de Me-hee-ko. This isn’t just any cocktail, served with a chameleon attached to the rim, it’s a spectacle in itself oh and the Blanco tequila and mango juice with a habenero tincture doesn’t hurt either. YUM.

The mood: paying homage to the 70’s era this is opulence meets sophistication with a purr of seductiveness. It’s described as a playground for the adventurous and boy does it deliver all the thrill and then some.

The Blockman - Parkhurst

Blockman Restaurant Parkhurst

Carnivores rejoice because 4th Avenue finally has a steakhouse that is not only spectacular in design but in flavor too. This is exactly what the Parks so desperately needed, a trendy, stylish, elegant steakhouse with five star service, serving the finest cuts of meat in town oh and did we mention they have their very own butcher too?

What to eat: meat meat and more meat. The finest ribeye in town, the fillet is like butter and the T-bone is procured and prepared with expertise. Because they have an in house butcher, their quality of meat ensures every dish is perfect.

What to drink: Glenmorangie 10 year old on ice.

The mood: a place to celebrate and the very heartbeat of the Parks. Inviting and exquisitely designed with a downstairs secret garden you must visit.

Ukko - Bryanston

In November last year Joburg welcomed a hot new dinning spot to its streets. The restaurant brings a sense of tranquility and style to the upmarket Nicolway Shopping Centre through its calming and natural elements and design. We loved it!

What to eat: order from their Mediterr-asian raw bar offering salmon, tuna and beef as a crudo, as well as tataki, and Peruvian ceviche oh and a plate of sushi to go with it of course.

What to drink: try their Ether cocktail (God of Air) with gin, fresh passionfruit, elderflower, prosecco and aromatic bitters.

The mood: a stylish and snazzy Mediterranean style tapas and mixology bar.

Chalk Craft Eatery - Parkhurst

This warm, welcoming new kid on the block has taken over the old Coobs eatery. This is a location where you come together with your besties for a night to remember or a romantic dinner date for two or even a first Tinder date. It is a real winner!

The food is perfectly balanced and prepared with only the highest quality ingredients.

What to eat: their hand-crafted flatbreads will get your taste buds spinning. The Hippie is a vegan style crisp flatbread with vegan tahini, pine nuts and fresh mint, it is too tasty for words. Also we loved the classic Green Italian with buffalo mozzarella and basil pesto and for the carnivores the tandoori lamb flatbread is mouth-watering.

What to drink: a double G&T

The mood: modernity meets comfort meets abundant foliage with indoor and outdoor seating.

OUI Bar & KTCHN - Rosebank

Radisson RED Hotel restaurant interior

We bet you haven’t heard of this brand new spot. You will find them inside the newly opened Radisson Red Hotel in Rosebank, Joburg’s first Red Hotel. The dishes land on your table like a gorgeously displayed bouquet of blooms and the restaurant brings a sense of warmth with warm tones as well as fun with a splash of red for pizzazz.

What to eat: visit them for breakfast because this is where you’ll fuel-up for your work-day. Stroll in, grab a  plate and serve yo’self from the sensational buffet offering and freshly bakes goodie selection.

What to drink: a delicious artisanal coffee.

The mood: a bright and charming space evoking a sophisticated vibe.

Jungle - Edenvale

Jungle restaurant dessert selection

Sometimes your tummy rumbles  and all it’s craving is a junk feast with burgers, milkshakes, sticky bbq ribs and chicken wings. So where do you go? You go to the Jungle of course in Edenvale. At times all you need is a pina colada served in a jungle tree cup with a giant burger and onion rings and a side of utter decadence. Also calories don’t count on a Sunday, remember that HJ!

What to eat: The Big Kahuna Burger we don’t have words for this meaty masterpiece, it is huge so ensure you go hangry.

What to drink: a Jungle monster milkshake, the salted caramel popcorn to be exact.

The mood: ridiculously awesome and a place where flops are acceptable to dine in. It’s slick and oh so groovy and yes there’s always a rumble in the jungle.
