Profile: Tristan du Plessis is Decorex Africa’s Designer of the Year 2024
He is no stranger to the world of design, especially now that he has also been named Decorex Africa’s Designer of the Year 2024. His work is instantly recognisable in Cape Town spaces like the famous Gorgeous George Boutique Hotel and the most sustainable restaurant in the world, FYN. Not to mention the penthouse suite he designed in collaboration with Gramm Award-winning DJ, Black Coffee. Tristan du Plessis is undoubtedly one of South Africa’s most creative talents.
Looking forward to his work being featured at this year’s Decorex Joburg, which will be taking place at the Sandton Convention Centre between 1 and 4 August, he aims to create a “small slice of his international projects” where those attending the exhibition will be able engage, experience and explore how he imparts his signature maximalist, yet refined luxury into global spaces. (Decorex Cape Town takes place between 6 and 9 June this year).
Tristan says: “I feel honoured to be chosen as Designed of the Year 2024 as I have a strong connection to South Africa. Even though the majority of my work is international, I consciously choose to collaborate with South African furniture designers and craftsmen to bring my various projects to life, so to be honoured among these talented designers in my home country is certainly something I’m very excited about.”
The designer founded his studio in Joburg in 2015, focusing on signature hospitality projects and later expanded to Cape Town. Other works he’s successfully brought to life include Sān Dubai, a beach club inspired by and named after Africa’s first people, as well as the Japanese-inspired local restaurant, Kōl Izakhaya.
