Return to the Good Times at Glenwood Bakery in Durban North
Do you remember Glenwood Restaurant in Bulwer Road, with its delicious food of unmatched quality and lazy evenings in the lantern-lit garden? Well, good times are back with the opening of the new Glenwood Bakery in Morningside. No need to rush in – it’s open for lunch and supper with a special menu from midday to 21:00, Monday to Friday. And, don’t worry. The breakfast we know and love is still on offer from 06:00.
Weeks of anticipation
For weeks, we’d been peering through the doors as the new café took shape. Finally, there it was and we got to experience the first service at the soft opening early in March. It was all we had hoped it would be. The bagel café around the corner had given way to the now much larger space, divided into an indoor and pavement seating area with a separate deli section offering its famous breads, pastries, homemade pasta and fresh condiments.
Choices, choices
We were slightly confused by the array of menus in the elegant sleeve. It was around 12:30, so we assumed the lunch menu would be the one to go with. After spending far too long scanning the lunch offerings – torn between mussels and chips, the homemade pasta and a Kassler chop with warm potato salad – our first-day waitress advised us that we were meant to be looking at the breakfast menu. With it being a day of firsts for all, a hasty rearrangement of tastebuds followed as we chose between an array of egg dishes and vegan options. Eventually, we fell back on a favourite: The Egg, which came with ciabatta topped with coppa ham and roasted tomatoes. Delicious as it was, we later regretted not taking the plunge to order the most surprising breakfast item on the menu. The Onsen Tamago – a Japanese breakfast soup with a slow-cooked egg – is what we’ll be returning for next time.
Our late breakfast included a glass of white wine, with the Glenwood Bakery’s liquor licence allowing them to offer a small selection of alcoholic beverages. You are, however, encouraged to bring your own wine at a minimal corkage charge.

Clearing the air
It turns out that the lunch and supper menu is actually available from midday through to 21:00 from Mondays through to Fridays. While we didn’t get a chance to try those tastebud-tempting dishes, our pavement-café breakfast was still superb. The friendly, relaxed atmosphere meant we stayed on long enough to have tried the lunch menu too, but as friends are raving and returning, we’re saving the treat of lunch or dinner for another time.
One thing is certain: The Glenwood Bakery reputation is still wonderfully intact!
