Review: Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3
Here’s the thing. When it comes to movies, we are pretty picky. It needs to come with a good plot, brilliant acting, keep you glued to the screen at all times and make you wonder what’s next. Furthermore, it needs to have a story with a lesson. In fact, that’s the most important part of a movie for us – the lessons we get to learn from it. Honestly, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 is that, and more.
First impressions
As we snuggled up in our IMAX seats, diving into our butter salt popcorn, two things came to mind. Firstly, we felt quite emotional being back in cinema, having not been to a cinema since last year’s Silwerskerm Festival. Secondly, being in a cinema at 09:00 in the morning to review the much-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 was quite exciting! As the movie started, we let it take us into a whole new world. A new galaxy, in fact, with all kinds of characters that pulled at our heart strings, drew us in and kept us there for the duration of an impeccably produced film. With actors like Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana (no one can roll their eyes like she can), Will Poulter, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Sean Gun and Dave Bautista to name a few, this action-packed film had us intrigued from the start.
What captured our interest instantly, was the way in which evil was constantly being defeated with heart-warming acts of kindness in the latest Marvel Studios film. And, how music – sometimes even unexpected, yet probably purposefully chosen genres – played such an important part in the movie. It was almost like a golden string being pulled through from start to finish. Furthermore, the way in which the movie portrays friendships between various different characters also captured our emotions. Old and new friendships drew clear parallels with real-life challenges when it comes to discrimination, making the film relevant and universal.
Finding happiness with the Guardians of the Galaxy
While the movie is not meant for smaller kids, teenagers and even adults will undoubtedly be reminded of some important life truths. In fact, you might even learn a valuable lesson or two.
As with any good movie, there are various emotions involved – from loss, sadness and grief to suspense, longing and finally, pure happiness. For us, finding true friendships and happiness are key to Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3. The kind of happiness you get when you make the decision to be happy in the moment. Like when you hear your favourite tune and decide to dance along with the beat. When you realise life comes with its challenges, yet you choose happiness. It’s the kind of happiness that rubs off on others and ignites the good within them. Still, there is also another kind of happiness in the film. One that makes your eyes well up with tears because of the beauty of it.
A story with a lesson
If there is one thing Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 has taught us in a matter of less than two hours, it’s to let life be and to be happy in it. Life is what it is. You can either fight against the evil in it, or find a way to focus on the good and be better for it. For some, this might mean letting go of something or someone. For others it might mean to help others see the good within themselves.
We give the superhero film, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 a Hell(o), yes! Go watch it.
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 is due to be released on 5 May 2023. You can watch the previous two movies on Disney+.
