Reyka: “A drama that sears itself into your consciousness”
The popular crime series, Reyka, is returning to screens in January 2024 and M-Net has just recently dropped the trailer. Reyka has won four South African Television Awards and was nominated for two International Emmies. In the crime drama, which will air on M-Net’s primetime, a host of new characters and powerhouse performances are bound to keep you guessing.
What viewers can expect
Played by Kim Engelbrecht, Detective Reyka returns having been seconded to the Durban Harbour Police Station. She’s busy building a profile of a killer who targets couples at a coastal lookout spot, known as Lover’s Lane. Interestingly, the assailant has a kind of protectiveness over his female victims, while he finishes off with male victims in a cold, clinical fashion.
Of course, these murders hit headlines nationwide and Reyka feels pressured to solve the mystery of the murders before the province’s International Water Conference, which is bound to attract scores of delegates to the city. In addition to that, Reyka’s past still haunts her. While Angus Speelman (Iain Thorpe from Game of Thrones) – who kidnapped her when she was a child – is institutionalised in a facility for sex offenders, she is still tormented by the abuse she had suffered.
In the new season of Reyka, the lead partners with a new detective, Ayanda Jali (played by the award-winning actress and musician Samkelo Ndlovu). Detective Jali is a tough and courageous detective with strong moral values and integrity and they become friends. In the end, Ayanda becomes Reyka’s confidant and helps her navigate her cases and personal struggles. Ayanda’s life is not without its challenges, though. Her boyfriend, Zee comes with his own baggage having grown up in a children’s shelter. The ow social justice vlogger and internet personality struggles with issues of boundaries and self-esteem. Ultimately, he is caught between his feelings for Ayanda and his own insecurities.
