The Iconic Wits Theatre Reopens: An Exciting Lineup Awaits!

Wits Theatre

The iconic Wits Theatre is back and it’s ready to dazzle the Joburg arts scene. The theatre at Wits University in Braamfontein is reopening after a period of dormancy and the historic venue is set to pulse with an exciting lineup of theatre, music, comedy and dance once again. Ultimately, this heralds a new chapter in the city’s cultural life, reigniting the passion of theatre lovers.

The theatre complex is excited to welcome Malcolm Purkey back. The Wits academic and former Market Theatre artistic director returns as Consulting Director of the theatre complex and says: “With the plethora of unimaginable talent within Johannesburg and South Africa, the Wits Theatre is proud to host a vast array of these talents within our top-class facilities, alongside the emerging talents of our incredible students.”

According to Purkey, the upcoming programme celebrates 42 years of the theatre’s success, standing proudly on a historical foundation of excellence. That, while also looking toward a future filled with incredible talent. “The Wits Theatre will once again provide the stage for historic moments in theatre, magical music and unforgettable dance experiences,” he adds.

What's Happening at the Wits Theatre This Month?

Antidote – The Musical

From 3 to 8 September, audiences can experience a unique absurdist legal drama. Antidote depicts the story of an experimental aggression-reducing drug tested on inmates. However, this attempt at ‘fixing’ humanity backfires dramatically. The musical is presented as a series of court trials and invites the audience to step into the role of jury members. Evidently, they become part of the performance as they navigate the gripping narratives of the convicts on trial.

Don’t miss this extraordinary lineup of performances that will set the theatre alight with creativity, emotion and the timeless magic of live performance. All are invited to celebrate the return of a Johannesburg cultural landmark and the many more years of artistic brilliance to come.

Bookings can be made at Quicket.
