The NWM Ford Rally-Raid Team Competes at the Top of their Game at the INGCO Parys 400
This past Saturday, at the INGCO Parys 400, the spotlight was on the Neil Woolridge Motorsport (NWM) Ford Rally-Raid Team as they showcased their latest evolution in off-road racing. Known for pushing the boundaries in the highly competitive South African Rally-Raid Championship (SARRC), the NWM Ford team once again proved why they are among the sport’s fiercest competitors. Despite victory slipping through their fingers, Lance Woolridge and Kenny Gilbert (#234) staged an outstanding comeback after Friday’s Parys 400 retirement, finishing third overall on Saturday’s Vaal 400 – just 1 second off the runner-up spot. Meanwhile, reigning champions Gareth Woolridge and Boyd Dreyer (#200) were set for a dominant victory but a late puncture saw them finish fourth, following a solid sixth-place finish on Friday.
Cutting-edge engineering and design
The event was a celebration of cutting-edge engineering and design, with the unveiling of the all-new Ford Ranger Ultimate. This beast of a machine, crafted in-house at NWM’s Pietermaritzburg facility, features a bold new look inspired by the latest-generation Ford Ranger. But the aesthetics are just the beginning – the vehicle also boasts significant improvements in aerodynamics, cooling, and off-road capabilities.
The NWM team, which includes the talented duo Gareth Woolridge and Boyd Dreyer, has made waves both locally and internationally. Their previous successes, including a stellar performance at the 2024 Dakar Rally, have set high expectations for this season. The new Ranger is equipped to meet these expectations head-on, with enhanced design features like wider wheel arches and improved airflow, ensuring that this vehicle not only looks the part but performs with unmatched precision.
One of the most striking aspects of the new Ranger is its aggressive design, complete with the signature C-clamp LED headlamps that are sure to turn heads on and off the track. This design isn’t just for show; it plays a crucial role in optimising airflow and cooling, which are vital in the intense conditions of rally-raid racing.
Under the hood, the twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost engine delivers a powerful punch, with fine-tuned control systems ensuring that every ounce of power is harnessed efficiently. With upgraded suspension and damper cooling, the Ranger is more than ready to tackle the roughest terrains, offering a smooth ride even in the most challenging environments.
As the NWM Ford Rally-Raid Team gears up for another thrilling season, fans and competitors alike will be watching closely to see how this latest evolution of the Ford Ranger performs.
The next race takes place in Welkom in the Free State on 13 and 14 September 2024.
