There Is No AI In Beauty
Dove is at the forefront of real beauty standards in South Africa. The brand has made a promise to South African women, to uphold a realistic beauty standard with no use of AI Beauty filters.
Why Dove Believes There's No Place for AI in Beauty
Have you ever tried a beauty filter on social media and LOVED the way you look? Have you removed the filter and had a self-deprecating moment or two? You’re not alone. AI beauty online has taken the beauty industry by storm, and to a new unattainable height. Sure, AI is a lot of fun and has helped many. But, setting an unrealistic expectation with AI beauty for young girls goes against everything we have worked so hard to avoid.
A shocking 63% of South African women and 35% of young girls (aged 10-17) suffer from lower self-esteem due to unattainable beauty standards online. This stems from AI Beauty filters available today. Almost half of these women would lose a year in their lives to achieve their desired aesthetic. While we are talking statistics, there has been a large decline in confidence since 2016. Numbers have dropped from 93% to a staggering 72%. This revelation triggered the team at Dove. Although the brand can’t change the narrative alone, they have spoken up and is making headway with its promise to not manipulate its advertising with AI beauty standards.
Are People Speaking Out Publicly?
Dove ambassador, Mpoomy Ledwaba spoke out and stated, “The results underscore a concerning trend, particularly in South Africa, where the decline in body esteem and confidence among women and girls calls for urgent action. Beauty should be a source of confidence, not anxiety. These statistics are a stark reminder of the work still needed to dismantle unattainable beauty standards and foster a culture of inclusivity and self-acceptance.”
America Ferreira’s monologue in Barbie is a true testament to the majority of women’s mindsets. It comes down to constant comparison. How far will beauty comparisons be taken to compare AI Beauty over natural, radiant, real beauty?
On the contrary, Dove has challenged propaganda since 2004 with their campaign for Real Beauty. Dove has advocated for real beauty, transparency, and honesty. To back this argument, the brand is returning to its original promise and reviewing its vows. Dove is committed to not using AI Beauty enhancers. Dove represents real women in their promotions. Further to this renewal, the brand is campaigning its latest ad launch “The Code”. The Code doesn’t reimagine beauty but defines the beauty that exists within each woman around the world. Dove is saying “Embrace” rather than “Disgrace”. They are generating the Dove beauty standard and they promise to never use AI to enhance their imagery.
Our team at Hello Lifestyle, is excited to see what else Dove has in store for their advertising. It’s time to change the narrative and start a beauty revolution. There should be no AI in beauty.
