Three of Jozi’s most underrated restaurants

Fat Zebra Linden

With the city of gold brimming with wonderful restaurants, we’ve noticed most eateries are pulling out all the stops. Service is outstanding, the quality of food is superb and its almost become a cherished treat to eat out.

But don’t just focus on the new and trendy spots. Joburg has some fine establishments that have been totally overlooked and under appreciated. In order to change this stigma, we thought we would eat our way through a few and show you just why these are three of Jozi’s most underrated restaurants.

1. Francos

Parkview

pizza chef at Francos Hello Joburg

This little Italian masterpiece is just what you would expect, it’s outdated, it’s antiquated and it’s darn lovely. We love it just as it is and by the way they’ve been making pizza since 1987, they’ve earned their brownie points.

They seriously serve the most delicious pizzas, just plain old simple crispy pizza from the wood fired oven, so fantastic, gooey and just delectable cheesy goodness.

#HelloRecommends a Doll’Orto  vegetarian pizza (R105) and a Francos salad (R78). Delizioso!

54 Tyrone Ave, Parkview

2. Jack's Bagels

Eagles Landing

This adorable local bagel spot is serving up some of the freshest, yummiest bagels and they have an extensive bagel menu to suit everyone’s palette. Their freshly baked, chewy homemade bagels are excellent, you have to take a few home with you too. And they even serve a proudly South African bagel: biltong, cream cheese and red onion!

Moms and dads rejoice too, they’ll make your life a little easier, pop in on your school drop off and get their awesome lunch box deal.

#HelloRecommends a Breakfast Bagel and a short cappuccino for ONLY R60 or their classic salmon and cream cheese option (R62).

They’re open from 7am. Monday to Friday.

3. The Fat Zebra

Linden (Parkhurst branch opened in August 2021)

Be prepared to be amazed by this intimate hidden Jozi gem. Oh and side note, big news, they’re opening up a second branch in Parkhurst, 4th Avenue this month!

The truth is the service at this restaurant is outstanding and so is the food, its that kinda eatery you can visit frequently and never get fed up with, you become apart of the furniture.

#HelloRecommends their fabulous veggie Z platter (R90) or try their peri-peri chicken with signature crispy potatoes (R94).

71, 7th Street, Linden, Randburg
