Top 5 food & wine adventures in Joburg over the Festive Season

Make the most of the freedom the Lockdown Level 1 grants us, and enjoy a little indulgence this Festive Season.

The Takeaway

We’ve just ended week three of our countdown to Christmas and are slowly approaching the much anticipated Festive Season Holidays. No more work, no more school runs and most of all no more isolation that lockdown brings. Thank goodness for Level 1. This week we’re breaking down our list of Top 5 Things to do in Joburg that relate to food and wine. In no particular order:

Take a trip to Stellenbosch in the heart of Fourways

This is such a simple idea that we actually can’t believe it hasn’t been done before. However we’re not surprised that the team at Indaba Hotel have pulled it off as they always have the most innovative ideas to keep their patrons excited and entertained. Case in point; The Gin School.

The Spier Wine Experience at the Indaba Hotel is a beguiling piece of the Cape Winelands right in the heart of Gauteng. The space will offer a comprehensive array of acclaimed Spier wines as well as delicious snack boards.

This is the ideal place to sample, sip and savour this historic Stellenbosch farm’s wines. Friendly and knowledgeable staff are on hand to walk you through Spier’s various ranges, each of which are available for you to savour on-site or to purchase for enjoyment at home.

In addition to being open to the public from Wednesday to Sunday (10H00-19H00), the space will also host launches, Spier Wine Club events, Special Celebrations and blending evenings. The tasting room is also available for corporate and private functions.

Take advantage of a Nando’s ‘get full quick scheme’ with the new Prego

Nando's Prego and Chips

With the kinds of scams out there these days, sometimes, you may not see a good deal when it comes your way.

This Spring, Nando’s is proud to confirm its newest addition to the menu is no scam. Nando’s proudly introduces their brand new Nando’s Prego which South African’s can enjoy with chips (or PERi-chips, our fave) for R49, Just Nje. This is not a scam. This is a get-full-quick scheme.

With their Afro-Luso roots, it’s a wonder that they have waited this long to add the illustrious, timeless, and portable PERi-Chicken Prego Roll to the Nando’s menu. This light, but tummy-filling new addition to the Nando’s family features a saucy chicken Prego fillet topped with grilled onions, served on a garlic buttered Nando’s roll and served with Nando’s chips.

In true Nando’s style, you can customise your Prego with your choice of flavour from PERi-ometer all the way from Tangy Tomato to Xtra hot.

Order your Prego and Chips now from Uber Eats, Mr D or your local Nando’s direct.

Joburg's newest and most distinctive cocktail bar

Who’s ready for stars in their eyes?

Welcome The Peeping Tom bistro, the latest hot spot to open on Bolton Road corner in Parkwood. Embrace the wacky, weird and wonderful at Jozi’s newest charming addition. Plus hello, you wont even notice the outside world because you will be so engrossed in this sassy new spot. Not only is it a little sinister with “fancy as f*ck” in pink neon as you enter but the crowds are playful too. Praise be- there’s finally a wicked hangout.

As you enter you’ll notice the “I see you baby” sign and a whole lotta pink, oh and flamboyant flamingos on bicycles painted on the yellow walls.

So what’s the vibe then you might ask? Well it’s intimate and smallish inside, there aren’t overcrowded tables but rather a gorgeous bar. The idea is to glow up and enjoy an uber stylish night out with your girlfriends or work colleagues. Yes this spot screams thirstythursday after work drinks.

They offer an all day bar menu with quick bites or nibbles for those focusing on the cocktails not the cuisine. But for the inner foodie inside, we recommend the delectable flash fried cauli heads in a vegan batter with velvet smooth beet hummus, zuzcchini rice flour battered fingers and the lemon feta plate and the vegan panna cotta to finish. Mingle and share all your latest salacious stories among Jozi’s hunks and the cheekiest chicks.

There is no doubt about it, this place is delightfully saucy, and it is just what Joburg needed after being in chains for so long.

Yip they’re ready to raise eyebrows!
