Gourmet Getaway: Why the NR Collection is Worth the Trip

The Club & Terrace NR Collection

Rooted in warmth, quality, and a deep love for hospitality, The NR Collection brings together a family of restaurants, each offering something special. From city sophistication to countryside charm, all with a shared passion for great food and memorable moments.

We recently wined-and-dined at Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate and Monaghan Farm to experience refined dining in the heart of Johannesburg’s countryside, right next door to Lanseria International Airport. Here’s how it went:

The Club & Terrace and The Village Green Restaurant

We whizzed and wound our way to the stony gates of Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate, the #2 golf course in South Africa, situated on Gary Player’s original farm. On our right and left, horses were grazing peacefully with woolly coats, ear bonnets and fly masks keeping them happy and boujee at the same time.

PS: We are off to play a four-ball here, so keep your eye out for that review — coming soon!

As we made our way to the clubhouse, we were welcomed by impala grazing alongside the greens. Additionally, the castle-like building that houses The Club & Terrace loomed against the countryside backdrop. We gazed out over the golf course and spotted golf carts bobbing from hole to hole. Split into sections for the halfway house, breakfast room, private dining, and the clubhouse restaurant, The Club & Terrace invites you to slow down and savour the view in whichever way you prefer.

However, leaving the snacks and bubbles behind, we jumped into our buggies and zooted our way to The Village Green Restaurant. Crossing over the Crocodile River, the serene estate made us feel like we were lightyears away from the bustling city. This rustic bar vibe somehow suited the luxurious estate perfectly, with traditional golf décor and a sunroom for dining. Furthermore, this family-friendly restaurant has a jungle gym, football courts and a life-size chessboard to keep kiddies entertained. With a wood fire for exceptional pizzas, fresh seasonal plates and Mediterranean cuisine in all shapes and sizes, it was a treat. So, whether you need a venue for family lunches, birthday parties or private celebrations, The Village Green should be at the top of your list.

The Other Side Country Restaurant

Hopping over the wall to their neighbour, Monaghan Farm is another oasis, just 15 minutes from Lanseria International Airport. Famously, this farm was the home of Jim Bailey, the founder of South Africa’s beloved Drum Magazine. Therefore, the décor in the restaurant is inspired by this historical publication, reminding everyone of the importance of media freedom. His wife, Barbara, still lives on the property — we spotted her doing a crossword puzzle while having lunch, overlooking her beautiful home.

Open Wednesday to Sunday, The Other Side Country Restaurant offers a home-like dining experience for the entire family. Overlooking the farm, the restaurant is perfect for long lunches and gathering with loved ones in a serene setting. Here, we tasted Mediterranean-inspired flavours, handmade pastas, crisp salads, grilled meats and comforting classics.

Pigalle Bedfordview

Our upcoming dinner at Pigalle Bedfordview is now very exciting, having had a little taste of what’s to come. This fine-dining Portuguese restaurant is known for its vibrant atmosphere, fresh seafood and signature Mediterranean flair. Subsequently, each dish is a celebration of organic ingredients, bold seasoning and timeless technique. Perfect for a romantic date, corporate function or private party, Pigalle’s upmarket interior and private dining rooms provide the ideal setting for any occasion.

PS: Keep a beady eye out for our full-length review — coming soon!

Therefore, from elegant dinners in the city to harmonious lunches in the countryside, the NR Collection offers the kind of dining experience that lingers. At whichever restaurant you choose to dine, the NR Collection is definitely worth the trip.
