#HelloRecommends: Hyde Johannesburg, The Ultimate Staycation

Hyde Hotels has added Joburg’s ever-evolving Rosebank to their list of locations. The recently revamped The Bank building is now the home of Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank – a bohemian-styled bleisure destination of note.
Inside, you’ll also find the NPF Tasting Room, the award-winning Proud Mary Restaurant and Workshop 17 – a modern co-working space. This ultimate all-in-one home away from home is a traveller’s dream, and that in the heart of Jozi!
NPF Tasting Room @ Hyde Johannesburg
Turning out of the bustling Rosebank streets onto Cradock Avenue, we spotted The Bank building in front of us. After parking, a valet met us at our car and led us into the hotel’s reception area. Locally produced artworks donned the walls of the hotel. Made by South African women, it sure was a sight to behold.
The NPF Tasting Room was nestled behind a wooden door to the right of the concierge. Of course, this is where our evening at Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank kicked off – with a glass of bubbly to quench our thirst. Entering NPF, the shelves behind the bar were fully stocked with a variety of spirits from all over the world.
Here, we had a taste of a new red wine, Eclectic 1.1 – a Longridge Reserve Cuvée from 2021. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot was produced in collaboration with Navigate World Whiskey, a partner of NPF.
Naturally, the whiskey drinkers among us were sipping on Fercullen Single Malt Irish Whiskey, the first release from Wicklow County in over a century. It was also The Powerscourt Distillery’s inaugural release. This spectacular bottle was just one of over 600 rare whiskies on offer at NPF.
Tasting or pairing flights are also offered at NPF, where five of each spirit can be trialed together. With 1000 limited edition expressions, 600 rare whiskies, 300 rums, 50 mezcal variations and 50 other fine spirits, a plethora of global spirits await you here.
Proud Mary @ Hyde Johannesburg
Following the introductory tipples, the crowd moved over to Proud Mary, the recent winner of the Luxe Hotel Restaurant of the Year Award. This all-day eatery, wine bar and coffee shop offers freshly prepared, globally inspired cuisine. And, the in-house sommelier ensures there is a wine to complement each meal. Therefore, at Proud Mary, you can expect a refined wining and dining experience.
We were given the full Proud Mary experience, with multiple small plates for starters, mains and desserts. Freshly baked brioche buns, an overflowing charcuterie board and a cheese platter were placed in front of us whilst our glasses were filled with Chi Riesling’s Saurweīn.
The mains consisted of pork skewers, line fish in lemon butter and saucy mussels. Then, our glasses of white wine were replaced with Grenache’s Cape Rock.
Pistachio macaroons and artisanal white chocolate blocks served as dessert, slowing down an evening well spent. As everyone sipped on espresso martinis – topped with three coffee beans – we celebrated health, wealth and happiness.
Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank
Finally, we sauntered upstairs to the newly renovated rooms on the fifth and sixth floor of Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank. With a bohemian-themed aesthetic, the hotel room was earthy, yet sophisticated in its entirety. All 131 rooms echo this ideology of free-spirited travellers.
We stayed in a General Admission King room which featured a plush King-sized bed, dedicated workspace, tea and coffee station and a quaint bathroom. In addition to this room type, the hotel also offers the General Admission twin, VIP King, VIP Twin, Platinum King, Platinum Double, All Access King and Headliner Suite.
To top it all off, the view from our window boasted the streets of the artsy Rosebank neighbourhood. Considering the vast amount of shopping, dining and entertainment options close by, Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank is certainly the ultimate staycation for those wanting to be close to the action.
Workshop 17 @ Hyde Johannesburg
But wait, there’s more! After breakfast at Proud Mary the next morning, it was time to work the day away. For those who need a workout before they can work, Hyde’s exclusive strength studio, cardio studio or yoga studio invite you in.
Hyde Johannesburg is also home to Workshop 17, a co-working space and collaborative place for creatives to share ideas and inspire creativity. Located on the third and fourth floor of The Bank, Workshop 17 is flexible, adaptable and fully-serviced. With an array of multipurpose facilities, such as cafés, boardrooms and event spaces, hot-desking is hip and happening, especially when hiding out at Hyde.
Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank balances work, play and sleep brilliantly. While you can work at the collaborative Workshop 17, you can also wine and dine at NPF and Proud Mary. At the same time, it offers the convenience of a functional hotel room, complete with trendy, Bohemian features.
