International Dog Day sees Muratie Pay Tribute to Man’s Best Friend
There are certain places where one can momentarily escape the hustle and bustle and step into another world. Nestled in the picturesque Knorhoek valley at the foot of the Simonsberg, Muratie is one such hidden gem. And, as today is International Dog Day, we can’t help but join them in paying tribute to the dogs that play such a huge part in the experience on the estate.
The wine farm embodies a rich history where the unique old-world charm is almost palpable. In addition, their warm country hospitality – immersed in centuries of tradition – is beyond compare. The estate is adorned with beautiful old Cape Dutch buildings, ancient oak trees, crumbling statues, antique wine-making equipment and an enchanting tasting room filled with famous cobwebs, stained glass and art – all set within a secret garden that offers a lush green sanctuary of peace and tranquillity. Not to mention the warm welcome one receives from the canines roaming the property.
Decades of Stories and Dogs
For decades, visitors have been captivated by the profound heart and soul of this historic estate. The passion for preserving Muratie’s centuries-old heritage is evident in every corner of this family-run farm. Even the Muratie wines carry a tangible sense of time, with each one named after extraordinary characters from the estate’s past. Of course, they each come with its own charming story detailed on the back label too.
On International Dog Day, Muratie has decided to pay tribute to the Melck family’s canine friends. Why miss the opportunity to celebrate Man’s Best Friend, right? In light of the special occasion, they’re celebrating the beloved ‘Dogs of Muratie’ – both past and present – that have brought them unconditional love, comfort, protection, loyalty, friendship and joy over the years.
Those who have visited the estate would know that the experience wouldn’t be complete without a warm greeting from one of the Melck’s dignified German Shepherds, gracefully standing guard over the werf, resting beneath the ancient oak trees beside the white memorial gable. In fact, friends of Muratie and frequent visitors know well that the Muratie animals are integral to the fabric of the farm. In addition to the playfully named canine crew (Frank Zappa, Axel Rose and Sid Vicious – an ode to Rijk Melck’s love of rock music), the resident ducks, geese, chickens and alpacas (Pirate and Kennedy) each add their unique charm to this family estate.
A Legacy
Just as the legacy of Muratie’s past custodians lives on, so does the memory of the beloved dogs who have crossed the rainbow bridge. They are all honoured in memoriam as part of the estate’s rich history.
Muratie is truly a unique and magical place, where visitors are welcomed with open arms to enjoy legendary wines, hearty farm-fresh food, outdoor activities, wine, food and music events, art exhibitions and more.
