The Coke Float is a phenomenon that is making a comeback on social media, in multiple forms. This spectacular drink’s origin dates back to the 1870s and we couldn’t help but wonder: Is it worth the century-long hype?
Well, TikTok and Instagram certainly seem to think so. This fizzy, yet creamy drink made up of classic Coca Cola is showing up on feeds everywhere. Whether you are making it yourself or ordering it off a menu, the Coke Float is for young, old and in-between, even in 2025.
Robert McCay Green is the father of this soda fountain inspired drink, transporting us to Philadelphia around 1874. The story of how it came about follows many paths, but the most told story is the one about him behind a soda fountain store at a village. Whilst sipping on his soda, he went to buy an ice cream from a neighbouring store. The idea struck him to put his ice cream in his soda and instantaneously, the Soda Float was created. He was so proud of his invention that he stated in his will to write “here lies the originator of the ice cream soda” on his tombstone.
Over the years, the drink evolved, with its makers preparing it with soda water, lemonade, Coke and other options. Our personal favourite is the latter, which isn’t surprising as the world is in agreement.
Fast forward to 2022 when TikTokker and Instagrammer, Nicolas Heller, tried a traditional Coke Float from the Lexington Candy Shop in New York. His video garnered 4.8 million likes. The next day, shop owner, John Philips, could not believe the line outside his diner’s door. And so, the revival of the vintage version started.
In South Africa, most of our fast-food chain stores serve a Coke Float: Wimpy, McDonalds and Burger King, to name but a few. The roadhouse, Kota Joe, is also famous for their floats with Spur and Milky Lane also jumping on the trend. It is not just on the kiddies’ menu either, but available for adults too. Ultimately, this drink is the definition of cross-generational.

Ingredients
250ml Coca Cola
One scoop of vanilla ice cream
Straw and spoon
Method
Scoop your vanilla ice cream into a tumbler class.
Pour the Coca Cola over the ice cream.
Start sipping and be sure to eat the ice cream as you go!
Now, the question is: Is the Coke Float trending again? Yes and no. TikTok is currently lusting after the new craze of Fluffy Coke. When Emma Grace posted a video making this drink, it got five million views and was suddenly trending. Now, we see other youngsters making this iconic drink. The best way to describe it is as a cousin of the Coke Float.
Despite several similarities, the Fluffy Coke is not as creamy, thick or heavy as a Coke Float. These characteristics make it somewhat more appealing for hot summer days alongside a bite to eat.

Ingredients
250ml Coca Cola
Marshmallow fluff
Ice cubes
Straw
Method
Coat the inside of a tumbler glass with the marshmallow fluff.
Pour the Coca Cola over the ice cream.
Add a few ice cubes to keep it chilled.
Use your straw to mix the fluff into the Coca Cola slowly.
