Italian wines shine at Wines of Italy Festival in Hyde Park

Italian wine and sunflower

The prestigious Vino in Piazza - Wines of Italy event - just took place in November and yes we were first in line to wine and dine.

The event was held at Hyde Park Corner rooftop and was spectacularly showcasing many Italian exhibitors. The Vino in Piazza promoted 19 wine producers coming to South Africa from various Italian regions, most for the first time.

We had a little ramble around the expo and cae up with the following list of our top five must buys when planning your Festive Season extravaganza:

1. Il Bastardo Rosso - our top pick

Why we love it: This is a 100% Sangiovese all the way from Tuscany, Italy. This full bodied, red cherry and berry flavor is all consuming, easy to drink and just sublime. We love the smooth yet fresh finish.

2. Valdo Paradise

Bottle of beautiful Prosecco

Why we love it: This Rose brut from Veneto, Sicilia is so easy to drink. Not only is it one of the prettiest bottles out there made by hand but its crisp fresh tangy flavor is addictive. Best served chilled.

3. ANNAFRANCESCA Charme

Why we love it: This decadent bubbly with merlot grapes just hits all the right spots on the tongue. Prepare for your taste buds to have an extravaganza with raspberry zang and fruity tang. It’s a perfectly balanced sparkling rose that is ideal for a long lazy luncheon out in the sunshine.

4. Masottina Prosecco

Why we love it: It is sparkling fresh, youthful and harmonic. This rose Prosecco is all the way from Veneto, Italy. With a sharp element of honey, vanilla and floral notes it is perfectly paired with desserts or even a slice of cake. You’ll find it difficult to not have a second glass!

5. Quercioli Reggiano Lambrusco

Why we love it: It is just bright, happy and fun. This Italian sparkling wine is produced in clayey soil and the Medici brand has been synonymous with excellence for more than one hundred years. It is a pleasantly harmonious high quality wine.
