Melville Koppies: The Natural Way To End The Year Off With A Bang
Walk amongst the wildflowers and explore the last conserved remnants of Johannesburg’s ridges before the discovery of gold in 1886. With geology that dates back three billion years, Melville Koppies offer those keen on the outdoors the opportunity to discover elements from the Early and Late Stone Age, as well as the Iron Age whilst hiking.
As one of the best spots to enjoy nature without having to travel to the far ends of the city, Melville Koppies boasts only indigenous vegetation. Additionally, there are loads of birds, reptiles and mammals to discover – fauna deemed necessary for a healthy ecosystem.
Whilst known for its diverse terrain, Melville Koppies still offers a scenic hike for all fitness levels, allowing individuals to reconnect with nature.
A Hike Through A City Heritage Site
Situated in the heart of Joburg, Melville Koppies is one of very few city heritage sites. Yes, the nature reserve is still standing, even long after Johannesburg became known as the City of Gold.
In addition to the last few infamous ridges of the city, you’re also bound to find preserved signs of life from earlier inhabitants like the Khoisan, Xhosa and Tswana people here.
It was Richard Hall and David Hirsch who established the Melville Koppies Management Committee back in 1993. Thereafter, Wendy Carstens took over and together with a team of dedicated individuals, she ensures the nature reserve remains well looked after.
Volunteers are responsible for the maintenance of the nature reserve and hiking trails, with donations from the public making it possible.
Reconnect With Nature
Abundant with vegetation, the Melville Koppies boast plants that are entirely indigenous to Africa. Here, you can walk amongst wild orchids and Proteas and feel the perennial grass tickle your ankles. Also, you can easily find shade under a Blue Gaarrie, Mountain Silver-oak, Wild Peach or White Stinkwood.
Along the trails you will hear the song of over 185 bird species. Plus, if you listen closely, you might hear the scurry of a rabbit, a hare or a mongoose. Perhaps even a hedgehog or a civet. And, maybe – just maybe – you might have to run from a snake or brace yourself for a race with a tortoise.
End Off The Year With A Hike
We think it a grand idea to partake in the 5km hike through the Melville Koppies and end 2024 off with a bang.
Entry to the Melville Koppies costs R90 per person (R50 for under 18s) on Sundays and a midweek tour costs R100 per person. Secure parking is free at Marks Park Sports Club on Judith Road, Emmarentia.
